Iâm a little bit confused on the truth of this when it comes to the Smell-o-vision part, but the rest seems rather solid and similar to what weâve heard already. Itâs highly likely that, due to the console using small cartridges, the Switchâs successor will basically just use the ds â 3ds method of backwards compatibility by just adding a single plastic nub to the side.
However, despite all the additions, Iâm not really seeing a whole new gimmick that Nintendoâs trying to add. Like, around the 2000âs, every console had something to set it apart. Wii had Wiimotes, Wii U had the Gamepad, DS had two screens, 3DS had the 3D function, and now the Switch has hybrid functionality. But what will its successor have? Sure, they can make it better, but thereâs nothing particularly special about this compared to the OG. Itâs not very⌠Nintendo-y to do this, and I really hope that this doesnât become a Wii U situation where by trying too hard to improve a console, they just fail outright. Itâs all fun and games until they discontinue Pro Controllers or something.
What Iâm saying is that the next console really needs to put itself on the map. Nintendo needs to keep their consoles innovative and at the forefront of the console gaming industry. Like, the Switch was a massive step forward in what you could do with a console, being the first hybrid between a portable and home console. Piggybacking off a singular console for more than two generations is generally just them running out of ideas. I sorely hope that the Switch doesnât just become their trademark.
Okay, thatâs enough said about a questionable leak on twitter, but where Nintendo will go next is a big concern, as keep in mind that they need to keep on introducing new consoles and not just carbon copies of old ones to stay afloat. If we donât get something new, that might just lead to the fall of a giant, and as unlikeable as corporations may be, you must admit that they make good stuff sometimes.
To be fair, theyâve been staying afloat just fine even without releasing a new console, and the switchâs biggest flaw is the power of the hardware itself. I donât think itâs a bad thing to just upgrade it and keep riding that success until there is a need to do something new, theyâll still be doing more than their competitors
Yes, itâs not a very nintendo-y thing to do, but for now I donât see too much harm. Sure, it wonât hold the same novelty as something like adding 3d to the ds or whatever, but if nintendo is ever gonna do something like this where they just do what their competitors have been doing for decades and make the next console simply a better version of the current one, I think now is a pretty good time. Nintendo is looking like theyâre gonna be leading in the âconsole warsâ this generation no matter what anyways. Hopefully the name âswitch 2â makes it nice and clear what this thing is
Innovation is great, but right now with how much Sony has been struggling to put out games, and with Microsoft looking to turn to generative AI this generation (canât wait to see if they ever get a quality product out of that), I donât think itâs really a worthwhile use of nintendoâs resources right now to try and make a huge new gimmick, since chances are they have less competition now than when the switch first launched. They have already drawn people in successfully, and nobody is threatening to draw the people back out.
(This is all just speculation tho, weâll have to wait and see what actually happens to know for sure)
