TTYD ✅

Just beat the TTYD remake. Gotta say: I really enjoyed it. The game improves upon PM64 in just about every aspect, and I can’t say the remake really messed up anything. There’s a touch of the modern PM design style, but it’s nothing too obtrusive. There’s a few dialogue changes too, but they’re not important. The new graphics look great, and the art gallery is a nice bonus. The new soundtrack is pretty cool for the most part, and there’s even a toggle for the original soundtrack. In the end, I really couldn’t have asked for much better. It’s still a bit hard to believe that this game even happened at all.

Congrats! I’m excited to start it soon. I might journal my thoughts in a post as I play through…
Does the remake still “feel” like the GameCube original or more like Origami King?

It definitely still feels like the original. The only hints of modern PM are the pixel-thin white character outlines, the front-facing mario sprite (oh the Sticker Star humanity), and a few objects have a more papery look than in the original (coins, the chapter starting screen coin, etc.). None of which I’d say really change much, and I got used to all of it pretty quickly.

On a side note, there were two other changes which I just don’t see the point in having been made. The “End of Chapter!” text was changed to “Cleared!” which is a bit less expressive, and instead of the little “…” or “!” icons appearing over characters or objects, there’s now bigger “Talk (A)” or “Check (A)” dialogs which I personally don’t think fit in quite as well and are a bit more reminiscent of modern PM style.

All in all, the remake really is quite faithful to the original despite the changes.

I would add that the “pixel thin white character outlines” are the uncoloured thickness of the paper that make up the characters, so that gets a pass from me.

I believe the most important thing about the TTYD remake is that you can see the dedication and care given to it by the development team, which most certainly is a good omen.

It definitely feels like the original, especially if you choose to use the original soundtrack
