I never considered doing it without the frog badge. Figured it was a prerequisite.

the badge lowers hooktail’s attack and defense by 1 with each attack, but you don’t strictly need it if you want a harder fight

I realized I should have put on the badge right at the beginning and I almost restarted, but decided to carry on. I used most of my items and it was a super close fight, down to the very last turn.
