Capcom has released an all-new commentary trailer for Lost Planet 3. Watch as Jim survives the threats of E.D.N. III - and meets a new ally.

When I started playing Lost Planet 3, I felt it immediately. Intrinsically, I knew it was made by a different team than the first two games. Lost Planet 3 has a distinctly western feel to it, and its trappings should be comfortable to anyone that has played a third-person shooter made in the last few years. Left trigger to aim, right trigger to shoot - dodge, take cover, reload, repeat. Familiar, perhaps, but by no means is that a bad thing.

Lost Planet has, in fact, changed hands, moving from Capcom itself to California developer Spark Unlimited. It's too early to tell if the change will give the franchise the shot in the arm it needs after Lost Planet 2, but what I experienced seems like a step in the right direction.

It's time to venture into the caves.

EX Troopers isn't bringing its anime stylings to our shores anytime soon. The Lost Planet spin-off comes out in Japan later this year, but Capcom's senior vice-president Christian Svensson posted on the company's forums to say a Western release isn't currently planned.

These things do change, of course, especially when Capcom has already filed a US trademark for the game. In any case, it's too early to write off a North American release for the PS3 and 3DS game just yet.

The Lost Planet games seem to divide people. They have their problems, it’s true, but there’s something in their native silliness and overwrought spectacle that I can’t help loving. Perhaps I am just a sucker for sci-fi catastrophe. Either way, it’s interesting to see just how Lost Planet 3 is dividing people, even fans of the original games, with the fresh cry of: “It’s all a bit frozen Dead Space.” Is that right? A look at Capcom's Scifi-Action game.

There's an interesting clash of play styles I discovered during my preview session of Lost Planet 3. When within his rig - a giant biped mech armed with a huge drill and claw - protagonist Jim is nearly invincible, try as you might to get to the soft, fleshy core of this hulking mechanical giant.

Yet Lost Planet 3 won't let you get away with cruising through the campaign from within the safety of Jim's rig - often he'll be forced to get out, navigating the cold tundras of E.D.N. III alone. It's at these times when I felt weak and without a safety net during my E3 demo. It's an interesting dichotomy not seen in many other games out there right now.

The dangers of a blisteringly cold ice planet are obvious, and the segments where Jim is on foot are incredibly hazardous. Exploring a web of caves, I stumbled upon an akrid nest. Think: the next scene in Aliens. There were eggs everywhere, hatching and releasing akrid spawn. My assault rifle quickly became ineffective at crowd control. Good thing I found that shotgun, which had the just the right amount of oomph.

It wasn't long before I found momma akrid, a large crab-like thing with pincers. It was a boss with an identity crisis, continually charging me like some bull who spotted a man in a puffy red parka. Shoot, roll to the side, and shoot some more.

I felt vulnerable and completely outmatched - the perfect combination of terror and panic only well-crafted scenarios can produce. I didn't have massive wells of ammo to draw from. I had to be nimble and crafty. I had to be smart about when I shot and where. And because of this, the reward of finally bringing this thing down was ever so sweet. Taking on such a thing in my mech would've been a decidedly different gameplay experience, one I feel would've lost all of the characteristics I enjoyed in the tense encounter.

These contrasts of feeling incredibly powerful and invincible within the rig, and feeling alone and desperate and vulnerable on foot, instilled a variety in Lost Planet 3 I haven't seen in many other games. If Spark Unlimited sustains that trend throughout the entirety of Lost Planet 3, I think they'll produce a fine game - and, dare I say, perhaps the best entry in the series yet.

Get to the Utility Rig and crush some bugs!

Delve deep into the mysterious base and prepare yourself for some startling surprises.

It must be hard to maximize your reach to gamers when there's a "3" in the title of your game. What if I've never played the first two games? How am I expected to understand all of the references and deep, established lore? It's quite the pickle for those looking to come into any established franchise without prior experience.

In the case of Lost Planet 3, it's a pretty interesting prospect. It's the third installment in a fairly polarizing series - either you love Lost Planet or you don't - from a relatively unknown developer who hasn't shipped that many games.

You think you know, but you have no idea.

While Resident Evil 6 took center stage during Microsoft's E3 presser, Capcom was quick to send out some new media for two of its other big titles here at E3, lest you forget them: Devil May Cry and Lost Planet 3.

One of the coldest franchises around makes its return with Lost Planet 3.

For those folks who would add themselves to a list entitled “got a kick out of the Lost Planet games”, of which I would be one, this video of the third game in the series will raise some eyebrows. Mine are raised right now. The reason for this is that while Lost Planet 1 was pretty, but a bit rubbish, it was a commendably over-the-top sci-fi action romp. Lost Planet 2 did more with co-op, and threw in some utterly absurd alien monsters and sci-fi situations for us to brawl with. Lost Planet 3 however, well, it seems to be heading away from bonkers alien-thumping action adventure, and towards survival horror and, more specifically, Dead Space. A rather cold Dead Space. Obviously the footage shown by Capcom Germany, which you can see below, is far from representative of what the full game will entail – these images certainly tell of mega-aliens – but the pace and tone here is certainly not evidence of the kind of craziness that made the first two games stand out, even if it is very pretty indeed. Capcom released some new gameplay footage of Lost Planet 3, accompanied by some quotes from German press. Spark Unlimited's sequel alternates between almost Dead Spacey third-person skulks through atmospherically underlit hallways, and first-person assaults on aliens while inside a giant mech suit.

There's also an emphasis on attacking an enemy's "weak spots" (joints, basically) with a big drill arm that actually makes us kind of sympathetic to the alien.

A new series of Lost Planet 3 screens posted to the Japanese website shows plenty of shooting, fleeing, and facing down terrible Akrid monsters. But it also shows this sweet, personal moment, as a guy in bulky armor relaxes and chats over a nice cup of Future Coffee.

The rictus smile of a man who has explicitly requested a transfer to a frozen and lost planet, riddled with alien bugmunchers, for the simple reason that the woman he loves no longer returns that love. Imagine his horror when she calls him via videolink to demand he returns the toaster they bought together. Force a grin, bearded warrior, force a grin. Also, is he clutching a coffee in his massive spacemitts? Here’s hoping Lost Planet 3 will have a thermos nursing minigame that emphasises the importance of hot beverages when hiking through a world of winter. A host of images lurk below.

#preview Sporting a story-driven solo campaign and an immersive snow-covered setting, Capcom's early Xbox 360 offering, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, stood out in a sea of samey sci-fi fraggers and me-too military shooters. Sadly, its sequel abandoned the very things-rich narrative, icy environments-that helped its predecessor rise above the predictable lock-and-load pack. Now, that’s not to say it wants you to avoid playing the game – nor is it requesting that you consider exchanging some of your precious monetary currency for J. J. Abrams hit island humdinger. “You,” in this case, refers to your character, Jim. In Lost Planet 3′s first trailer, he is having the worst day, because the titular Lost Planet’s continent-sized nametag should really read “Hello, my name is Incredible Jerk Planet.” First, some sort of alien plant dog knocks him down a mountain, then his gun jams, then a giant enemy crab crashes the party instead of letting him bleed in peace, and finally – when he and his poor, frail 50-ton mech are trying to catch a breather – a snow tidal wave strikes. That’s probably not even physically possible, but that is the extent to which this planet wants Jim to go far, far away. Sounds delightful, right? Well, I have a bit of bad news for you.
