Unknown City

The rain pounded upon the stone surface in a torrent, the water's roar eternal in the blue night sky. One young man stood atop the ruined structure, his grey eyes raking the canopy of destruction that stretched for miles below. This had once been a city of prosper, filled with a bounty of life and happiness among those who dwelled within. Now, only the storms of the earth were its visitors - and a lone individual, with nothing but a name: Audrin.

Audrin knew his name alone of all things, for he carried no memory. He had awoken atop the old building, which felt prone to topple into pieces at any moment. It was the heart of the ruined city, the tallest of all structures, and it was on the verge of collapsing, taking with it the last remnant of the city's life - and the man who stood atop it. Why was he here? Where was 'here'? The only thing running through Audrin's mind was a ceaseless string of questions.

Audrin took a single step forward. It was difficult; the rain was like a savage weight that threatened to tie him down. But his need for answers unrooted him, drove him forward. He had to know, had to understand. And so his first step set everything into motion - quite literally.

The entire structure immediately began to tilt forward. The smallest shift in weight had acted as a sudden trigger, so weak was the building. As it fell forward, Audrin started to slide downwards with it, nearly losing his footing completely. He slipped and stumbled across the surface, made slick by the rain, at an increasingly rapid pace. The angle had now neared ninety degrees, and Audrin let out a gasp, the sound of which was drowned out by the storm around him. A sheet of rock loomed ahead. It was the side of another building, and Audrin now faced death as the top of the shifting tower threatened to carry him into it, to crush him.

Audrin shook his head, sending a spray of raindrops flying from his long, black hair. His life would not be ended by his first step; this ruinous city would not become his rocky tomb, for it was not his destiny. This much now he knew, by some strange instinct that had suddenly seized his heart. This new instinct, coupled with adrenaline, drove Audrin to jump forward. He turned as he did so, leaving his back to the wall of rock he had previously been facing. He pressed both of his feet against it, and gritted his teeth as he observed the tower he had been standing on, now speeding towards him in its collapse. It was so close... so close that he could see fine streams of rainwater running across its stone skin, almost like blood crying from an unseen wound, for the heart of the city was dying. Audrin, however, would not die with it.

All of this he had seen in the space of a second. An instant after placing his feet against the rocky wall, Audrin pushed from it, propelling himself upwards. He sailed over the falling tower, the top of it meeting with the wall only a scarce moment after Audrin had jumped clear of it. Now Audrin found himself running along the side of the tower, which was breaking apart fast. The wall that he was running from let out an almighty roar as it crumbled, smashed into enormous bits of debris. The rain now became that of both water and giant slabs of broken stone. Audrin continued to run, gasping as one particularly large piece struck the surface of the tower near him. Audrin fell forward, sliding quickly out of control. More segments of rock narrowly missed him, one after the other. The rain was beating a frantic rhythm that went along with his own pounding heart. And the earth below was fast approaching...

Audrin let out a yell as his wild ride ended with him hitting the ground - hard. Audrin rolled over onto his back, breathing fast. Through the heavy rain he could see the two buildings, or at least what was left of them. Both had been reduced to a single massive pile of rubble.

The Unknown City was dead. Audrin was still alive.

To what purpose?

This final question burned within the young man's mind before he slipped into unconsciousness, the darkness overtaking him completely.

Quiteus Sequel is my first attempt at an ORIGINAL fiction story. This is Part 1. I'm not sure how long it will be. It is about Audrin, a man with no memory who awakens within a world that is nearing its complete death. This story takes us with him through a quest for answers, and much more. I hope that you enjoy it.
