I'm not that good anyway. Compared to the rest of the world, I suck. Plus, all I really do is fan art. I haven't had a creative idea since before march, all I've posted that's origianl is cOLD. I think my time in this wonderful world is up. I wish I could stay longer, but I don't truly belong. Looking around lately, I could never be like anyone here.

So ya, just a heads up to my watchers, if any.

No one artist is "better" than another; artistic tastes differ. Every artist feels incompetent at some point... most of the time, it's because they don't get as much positive feedback as others. Is it because they "suck"? No. It's either because their art doesn't fit into the current mainstream genre, or they're attempting the mainstream genre without as much experience as other artists who are accustomed to said genre.

Art is like fashion. The stuff that people like changes all of the time. Don't give up just because you don't draw the same way as everyone else.

Thats kinda how I felt too. I used to be an artist, but I quit...mostly because I just couldn't finish my art. :(
But...after reading Abstract's...description of art, I might go back to my artistic ways...^^

I can say keep trying, think of it as a challenge to conquer, and if that doesn't work find a new artform. I know I have difficulty drawing, but I also know that I can also play music well, so that's what I do. It took me some time to figure that out though, but once I did I loved it. Just try to broaden your perspective before giving up everything.

If your issue is that you won't be like anyone else, or that you won't be good as anyone else, then yeah, give up. Art is about expression, Art is what you want it to be, and not always 'how good you are'. Give up if you're not enjoying it. But if you are, don't let go of that. I do a lot of fan art myself, but I enjoy the hell out of it, and that should be good enough.

I still have the problem where I can't finish projects, too.... it drives me insane. What I'm going to do is make sure i finish and post it, because accomplishing something feels great.

Good luck :D

No, it's not about fashion. I could care less what other people draw. I just can't think of anything original. I feel I have no purpose here in this field if I can't make something up. Yes, fan art is fun. But it's void. I get no true feelings of success, due to the fact that it has already been made by someone else.

I look around at the creativity that flows through other artists viens, and see none of that in myself. I just don't see what the point is.

But it's okay. I was never really good to begin with. The only thing I ever really did well was my avy. But that wasn't even original. Still fan art.

If you have fun and/or enjoy doing something, do it. If not, then don't do it unless you want to.

Fan art can be the basis of creativity. That's really all I can say. Maybe one day you'll suddenly have an idea that you can consider "creative". o.o

More than creative. Origianl. It doesn't matter how interesting the picture is, if it's fan art, it's not original. And If I wanted a career in some art field, I would most likely need to have original characters/plots/scenery.

Hm... well, looking back at some of your art pieces, I remember seeing a demonic-looking form of the Chaos Heart. Although fan art, it was original in its own right... that could actually be the beginning of an original character, you see.

Two of my characters "evolved" from fan art... fan art is something that many artists... start with. Then they get to the point that you're at, get fed up, and things begin to change.

So, don't give up on art completely. You have the potential to be a great artist.

Read lots of sucky books and look at lots of sucky art.

Pretty soon you'll be like, "I can do better than this."

That's what happened to me. Darien, Heather, Raphael, Lilly, and my other original characters spawned from me reading Cirque du Freak and thinking, "I can create a better teen-friendly vampire novel than this."

How about this... one time I saw a "modern sculpture." It was a light bulb that was on. That's it. A lightbulb that was on.
I bet you can do a better "modern sculpture" than that. Try it.
