I visited my girlfriend on Sunday, and I had dinner at her house.
So, her family and I sit down, and her dad turns towards me and says to me "I think you should say grace". He knew I came from a Catholic family, but he didn't bother asking me what religion I was.
So I just kinda made a "Zwaaah?" noise and stared at my girlfriend with a scared look on my face. I couldn't say grace. I never could. I don't participate when my family does it (only when the extended family's over for important holidays). So, he made my girlfriend do it. I told her dad that I "wasn't very religious", and he just kinda turned away and didn't talk to me for the rest of the meal.
Damn, I felt so weird for the rest of dinner, like... REALLY, REALLY uncomfortable. I'm kinda glad my girlfriend isn't religious, because I probably would've died if she acted the same way as her dad. D: |

I know that exact feeling, for I am not that religious either. In fact, I'm not religious at all.
I hope all goes well. If he ends up being one of those fathers that are like, "You can't go out with him because he is not religious or like us," then run man! Run and rebel! Take her with you! Run! |

Well it's different if you spend a meal over them because of the conversation factor.
My parents would probably hook up my (nonexistent) boyfriend up to a lie detector and grill him. |

Ouch... that was a big no-no on his part. Even IF you had no problem "saying grace", you would still feel nervous and uncomfortable being forced under the spotlight like that. Are you sure you didn't imply that you would be ok with something like that, like talking about your Catholic family? Sometimes guys will say anything to get on a girlfriend's parent's good side, and then end up having to backtrack later. |

Usually religion can be a vital thing in relationships. Some, or perhaps Most parents want their children to marry a man they trust. Your girlfriend's Parents seem to be Christian, and they probably want their daughter to marry a man they trust. You, knowing that you are not a Christian, aren't right for them. It's easy to say "Deal with the Parents", but you can't. They make the final decision if you will get married to a certain person or not.
I think that her Dad asked you to say grace to see what you would do. That was his way of finding out what religion you were, instead of asking. My best advice is to stay away from that subject as much as possible. |

Your girlfriend's dad left you humiliated, mortified and joyfully drained. He shall face the consequences! I hope my curses chop him up fine enough to be liquid, then we shall feast on steak and Father beer. |

That was a while ago, but it was kinda hurtful.
And while I highly doubt I'll marry this girl, her parents really don't have a say once she's over 18.
And also... Yes, I've been avoiding all religitalk (yeah, I made that up) recently. |

My gosh. D= That came from nowhere. >.<
Jeez. He shouldn't have done that to you. D= Maybe he was just assuming that you would be able to do that? But either way...That's not right. D= I'm not very religious myself, but...gosh. I would hate being put on the spotlight like that. I hate getting so much attention by a group of people. (Even a small group of only like 5) Well...Just don't worry too much about it, alright? *pats your back* Did you talk to your girlfriend about this? =o |
