A story I'm writing. I haven't really done much with it, but here's the first "chapter," and it functions as an introduction.
Chapter 0: "Introduction"
Code: | It was late at night, december first, year 2013. But time didn't matter to them, at least not now. The world had changed, in fact everything had changed. They were soldiers; a different breed of soldiers. Time soldiers. Their enemy wasn't a tangible one... it was, in fact, time itself. A man stood in front of the soldiers, fully covered in high-ranking armor worn by officers. A few soldiers were standing at either side of him, as guards of sorts. "Think of every well-known law of the earth, the universe, time, and space that you possibly can," said the man, "do you have them in your mind? Well let go of them, because they're all wrong." After hearing this, the guards grunted, as if to say "isn't that the truth." The soldiers lined up in front of the officer were all new recruits, and were more confused than they'd ever been. They had already been given their suits, and were wearing them. All except for one recruit were wearing their helmets. "What do you mean, it's all wrong?" said one of the new recruits, "I mean... look at me, I'm not floating in space right now. Gravity obviously still applies." The officer stared at him, though nobody could tell what he meant by it with his helmet-covered head. "Put your helmet on, soldier, and I'll show you the world you're going to be living in for the rest of your natural life," said the officer, as he motioned for the soldier to walk over to him. The soldier followed; and so, shortly after, did the rest of them. "Your names are now unimportant," said the officer as they were walking down a hallway, "I recommend you forget them. You will all be given numbers at the end of this walk, and you will be wise to remember them." The soldiers didn't respond, due to either confusion or shock. As the officer promised, as soon as they reached the end of the hallway, they entered a large, mostly empty room. On one side of the room there was a wooden desk with a very advanced computer laying on top of it. Behind the computer was a small woman with glasses, typing at the computer. The officer walked up to the desk, with the group of soldiers following behind. Since there were only five new recruits, this was a small group, but the woman still frowned as she looked at it. "More?" she asked the officer. He nodded, and she typed a bit more on the computer, then looked at the first new recruit. "You're number Eight One Five." She stated while pointing at him. "Me?" asked the recruit. The woman just frowned, nodded, and motioned for the next recruit to move up. When he did, she merely said "Eight One Six" and motioned him away. This continued until number Eight Two Zero was given his number. The officer had moved to the end of the room at this time, and motioned the newly numbered soldiers to follow him, and they started walking again. "By the way, I am number One Two Three." He paused, then started talking again, "I realize the uniqueness of this number. It's purely coincidental. But it's easy to remember, and I expect you to remember it." He stopped for a moment, and all the other soldiers stopped as well. He looked down the hallway, though he couldn't see far. This hallway was, for some reason, poorly lit, so perceiving distance in it was a difficult task. After a while, he started moving again, and the other soldiers just assumed he needed a quick break. After a while of walking through the dim hallway, the officer paused again, but this time reached for the gun holstered by his side. The other soldiers grew a bit worried by this, and were all prepared for a fight, until another officer walked up to greet Number One Two Three. They didn't talk, but instead nodded at eachother and soon everyone was moving again. After what seemed like hours, the end of the hallway was in sight as a room lit by a blue light came into view. Everyone moved into the room, and the Officer looked at the wall opposite of them. There were exactly five doors, numbered one through five. They were not standard wooden doors, however. They were clear glass doors, and behind them was a seemingly empty room with just enough room for one person of standard height and weight to fit. On their right were five beds, lined up with only enough space between them to walk. On their left was just a blank wall with a single door. "That door leads to the kitchen and the bathroom," said the officer, "and you'll have to keep your uniforms and casual clothes by your beds. I recommend checking out a box from the main office to keep them in." The soldiers looked around, and numbers Eight One Seven and Eight One Nine took their helmets off. "Welcome to your new home," said the officer. Before the new recruits could ask the officer or either of his two bodyguard soldiers what the five person-sized rooms were for, they all three left the room the same way they entered. The new recruits all moved for their beds, as if they had agreed telepathically that sleep was the best option now, and they all prepared themselves for sleep. Number Eight One Five, uncomfortable with this entire situation, just climbed into his bed with his suit still on, put his helmet at the foot of his bed, and attempted to sleep. Number Eight One Six attempted to look for a light switch, but after failing to find one he gave up. After everyone had climbed into their beds, the lights in the room automatically dimmed until they were completely off. It wasn't exactly a comfortable or peaceful sleep, but it was needed. However short the day really was, it had seemed as if it had lasted a year. |
Code: | Chapter 1: "Welcome to... oh, nevermind." It wasn't a peaceful sleep at all... not for any of the soldiers. It was especially restless, however, for number eight one five... this was the first night in months that he had been in any form of bed. He officially never had a name... was never given one, and so this number system worked nicely to his advantage. Though the other soldiers didn't complain, they all had their thoughts within their own minds. Eight one five was the only one who needed to be given a number. Memories of the past flooded through his mind. Broken memories, useless symbols flying through his mindscape. His dreams were not complete, they were broken and shattered, and terribly difficult to interpret. Every second a new memory would appear in his mind, and the previous one would be forgotten. Soon it was all lost, however, when the lights were suddenly switched on. Everyone woke up, and the officer walked in, again clad in his officer's armor. "I hope you all had an amazing sleep," he stated aloud, "because that is the last time you're going to sleep here. I know, it seems kind of redundant to give you your own room and call it your new home, just to tell you that you'll never see it again. Well I'm sorry, but the orders have changed. Originally, you were all meant to be nothing but backups... to just sit here until things got rough... but we've been running low on soldiers lately and we need SOMETHING." The new recruits all looked around, at each other, back at the officer, and the officer spoke again. "Those doors, over there, on that wall. Once you are all fully prepared to be dropped straight into hell, you'll walk right into your favorite door. It doesn't really matter, since those portals are a one-time use only, and there's the same number of them as there is of you." The new recruits looked at him in shock, not knowing what to say, and just as number eight one five opened his mouth to ask a question, the officer started to speak. "There will be no questions. The more I help you, the less we'll get done. So... with that done... I think I'll be leaving you all. Oh, trust me, each and every one of us will meet again... but not for a long time." The officer left, and the new recruits just stared blankly at each other, still not communicating. All, that is, except for number Eight One Nine, who was still laying down. "If you're all gonna just sit there and do nothing all day, that's fine with me," he said as he got up and started suiting up, "but I, personally, am ready to see what that guy is talking about first hand. It sounds pretty exciting." He went up the door on the farthest right, opened it, went inside, closed the door... and immediately afterwords, the door completely disappeared, and the wall was perfectly smooth as if a door had never been there. |

Updated. The intro is longer than chapter 1. Awesome, right?
Anyway, welcome to hell. This is either gonna get really good, or really confusing and I'll be forced to drop it. We'll see. |
