Biologically speaking, humans are animals. But no species has developed any form of technological advancement or social organization more advanced than ours. That is why humans are often considered separate beings from animals.
And now... -waits for this to turn into a furry thread- |

Bodies are nothing more to us than husks we use to interact with the physical world. Animals on the other hand are not self aware, therefore their bodies are essential to them. In a sense, the brain is just another minor organ for most animals. As humans, we have the possibility to exist without our mortal forms, that is what separates us. |

Because humans are smart enough to understand and smart enough to develop other protein sources, and it's our job to protect animals that are weaker than we are.
Lions aren't smart enough to do that, so they can't. | So, in other words, vegetarianism should be forced on everyone because we need to pay for all the animals we've eaten or something?
Humans are animals. Some animals are omnivorous. We as a species happen to fall into that category. Therefore, if WE have to "Protect other species", why not make bears stop eating fish?
What I'm trying to say is that humans are animals, so we should be allowed to eat whatever the heck feels good for us. |

It depends on the animal.
Humans can live healthily without eating meat, so can dogs, but cats can't, cats have to have meat in their diet to be healthy.
Therefore, all animals that can be vegetarian should be, but not all of them can be.
I can't help but feel that anyone who isn't vegetarian is just lazy. |

Well, of course, that is only taking in to account the needs of people, not the wants of people- and we all know that focusing on needs alone won't create the most happiness in any area of human life.
It isn't like the animals are being wasted, either. Cows, chickens, pigs, and related food-source animals benefit us the most by using them for food. |

If ALL animals that can become herbivores do, do you have an understanding of just how much that would upset ecosystems? If that many plant consumers were left alive, do you know how overpopulated they would become? |

It's not because I'm lazy, I just like the taste of my food. |

I'm talking about domesticated animals, not wild ones. You obviously can't make wild wolves be herbivores.
And you can get the taste of meat without actually eating meat with soy products. Some of them are amazingly convincing. |

I don't know about that. I've had my fare share of substitutes in the past, and few come close to authentic meat. The texture, the juicyness... it's all pre-determined, and lacking-in-taste. None that I have tried have been filling, either. I mean, you can't order a soy steak medium-rare; it would always be a full-cooked leftover. |

I don't want chunks of beans that taste like fish or chicken. |

This is true. While I do think that some meat substitutes are good in their own right, I would not choose them over actual meat, since they taste almost nothing alike. And I love the taste of steak. Very much. |

Some of them. But I haven't found good soy products for my two favorite meat meals: Bacon and Bologna. |

Let me be totally honest here... Jolene, you're a damn hippie.
Humans eat meat and we eat vegetables, we're omnivores. Sure, we could all be happy *crag* hippies all day long if we could photosynthesize, but that doesn't happen, so we eat weaker animals.
You're all trying to go against nature, and trust me, nature will kick your *crag* ass. |

Calm down, Rawrskey, no ass-kicking is required.
I don't care if there's soy products that can mimic my meat, it's a personal preference. That's like saying anyone who doesn't use Firefox, or anyone who doesn't have a mac is lazy, but with food when you think about it. |
