Metaknight makes no sense to me, but I never use him. Snake makes a buttload of sense because he creates items in itemless environments (MLG tournaments) and has good range and damage.
I play with items but I've editted down the item list based on balance and fairness. Hammers, Dragoon, Maxim Tomatoes, Heart Containers and Smash Balls are all off.
I used to be a fan of Smash Balls until friends of mine started using Star Fox characters. Landmasters are so amazingly unfair in every way shape and form that I've decided that Smash Balls just aren't nearly balanced enough.
And when items are added into the mix the tier list gets really topsy-turvy. One of the stats that is massively ignored by tourny-tards is Item Use, Throw Strength and Throw Speed. This does vary between characters and creates more discrepancies in the balance between characters. If anything I think it adds to the balance. |
They're not strictly speaking the top tiered characters. THUS FAR, they have won the most tournaments. But pro smash players are constantly discovering new techniques, so this is subject to change. |

Players have just, in the metagame (top level of play), learned how to use the characters at the top of the list efficiently. Those closer to the bottom aren't bad, they just don't have the advantages of the top-tier characters. For example, the worst character in the game is Captain Falcon. Why? Because of his crappy priority (Snake's regular punch "A" has better priority), bad approach moves, and lack of projectiles. And Crazy Cody could probably obliterate 9/10 of you with him.
What does this mean? Well, it means that you can beat higher-tier characters with lower-tier characters. However, the high-tier characters have advantages over the lower-tier characters that the lower-tier characters cannot exploit.
Putting this into extremely stupid terms, let's compare this to Yu-gi-oh. Snake is a Blue-Eyes White Dragon, and, say Diddy Kong (middle-tier) is...er...Flaming Swordsman. The players attribute for the magic and trap cards, with traps reducing the strength of Blue-Eyes and magics improving the strength of Diddy Kong, making Diddy Kong win. Will Diddy, in a one-on-one battle at top power for both, ever win? No. However, with the right players, anyone can beat anyone else.
Also, top-tier is Snake, MK, and Mr. Game & Watch, in that order, so beat the crap out of those guys, 'K? |

Game&Watch is really good--At least he trumps Ness when used correctly.
But good post Mister I, I agree completely. |

Tiers fail and are for tourneyfags who want to win no matter what and do all the math before there matches so they can insure victory. All the characters have there weak points and storng points that can be exploited by certain characters and such, it isn't the tiers that decide who has a better chance of beating someone, it's the person's skill and how well they can defeat there oppnent and defend there character's weaknesses. Tiers just ruin the game and make it less fun. |

I have incredible footage of me owning Pit using Ness... granted it was the computer but it was such a gloriously royal beating with one of the coolest dodges I had ever done.
And yes, the tiers make the game much less fun, and people really misconstrue what they represent. I remember once I was on 4chan and some guy said he was going to start using certain characters on certain stages with no items and he assumed he'd automatically become better.
I wanted to punch him needless to say.
Using a different character or a different set of rules won't make you any better--Practice against other human players and finding out all your strengths and weaknesses will make you a better player.
I know I'm not perfect with Ness and I practice with him constantly to try and figure out all his ups and downs. Just the other day I found out PK Rocket does not have priority over Ike's Sword... which was really really annoying XD |

Tiers are true, it's how people interpret them that makes them a pain in the ass. There's nothing wrong with tiers in themselves. Name a game where no one character has been better than any other. There aren't any. That's because it's impossible. people will find things that make one character the best. |

Jigglypuff is mid-tier(In the original and melee) and acknowledged as being amazing in the right hands. o.o
And tiers are designed to come into effect ONLY at maximum skill.
SO basically: Tiers mean absolutely nothing unless you have mastered teh game completely.
And no one has mastered brawl.
So tiers aren't stupid.
You know who placed at the bottom for brawl? Pichu and Bowser. I wonder why?
Maybe because pichu damages himself and bowser is slow as hell.
Oh, and rule of thumb: If you don't like the idea of tiers, they're probabl;y not going to affect you. at all.
one last thing:

Jiggles is really fun to play as. I always love tricking people when I pull her out. She is my secret weapon.
But yea--Tiers will always exist. The best thing you can do is just ignore them and Brawl your heart out when it comes down to the line. You need to know how to and when to exploit your opponents weaknesses and if you can do that, tier-list regardless, you'll have a much better chance. |

And the thing is, before you even start worrying about tiers, you have to be amazing. And besides, tiers are only for if you're planning on entering any tournaments. If you don't care about tiers, just ignore them. you don't need to on and on about how stupid they are, because honestly, they aren't. You don't need to like or care about tiers unless you're planning on playing professionally. if you only play the game for fun, they don't matter. |
