Imagine New York. Or Detroit. Or insert name of hideous, disease-ridden, slummy city here.
Now make it a million times worse and throw in a few hints of Black Plague-era England, or Ireland during the potato famine, or a general disaster area. Smokestacks everywhere. The houses nothing more than piles of second-rate building equipment, rusted roof shingles in the dirty streets and mounds of garbage being shoveled out of the alleyways.
People in gray, ragged clothes were everywhere, working hard. They patched up rooftops, cleaned up the remnants of major spills, scrubbed the pavement and the sewer grates...It was all sadly futile, though. Even though the city wasn't too crowded, there was still a lot of people- about enough to fill a few suburban neighborhoods- and no matter how hard they worked, there always seemed to be more filth... |
