When I started up my computer after it kept randomly freezing about 4 times today my taskbar suddenly dissapeared along with the icons on my desktop.

What OS do you have? It happened on my Vista, and I just shut it down through the CTRL+ALT+DEL menu. Everything was better next time I started the computer up.

Try restarting Windows Explorer. It works for me. Then again... I'm mainly a Vista-user.

if Windows Explorer (NOT Internet Explorer) crashes, the taskbar will dissapear. You need to restart Explorer to get it back.
Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to start the the task manager.
In the Task Manager toolbar menu, somewhere there is an option of "Run...". Select it.
type "explorer", hit enter and Windows Explorer should come back.
