...to run on my old Compaq. I want to make it run TF2 (which I'll also need more RAM for, if I can find out how), but mostly I just want the slow piece of shit to run faster. My budget is around $100-$150 right now, and I know I'm not going to turn it into a behemoth of a computer at that price. I doubt I'll be able to get TF2 running smoothly, but that's just be icing on the cake.
The problem is, I don't know what's compatible with what and I don't want to waste my money. All I know about this thing is that it has an S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR in it right now, which I'm pretty sure is ancient. |

I think the highest graphics card you can get without going over the $150 budget is a GeForce 8600. If not that, then an 8500. I got my 8500 for about $120.
Team Fortress 2 should run fine, if not perfectly, with either of these. Of course, it'll run better on the 8600.
HOWEVER, If the computer is really old, it might not have the processor or strong enough of a power source to run everything perfectly. Most, if not all, graphics cards use PCI express slots, and if you don't have those, they can be a pain to install. |

Is there any way to find out if I have a PCI slot? I don't want to waste my money. I don't know if I really have the technical knowledge to be doing this sort of thing, but eh, I need it. |

You can either look up your computer model online, or take a peek at the back of your computer. If you really want to, you can open up the thing and check inside. |

Go with the 8600 FOR SURE. It's a big improvement on the 8500 and it'll prove to be more effective. |
