They're the ones with the robots, factories, cyberpunk megalopolises and floating battle stations, while the Good Guys live in small villages in peaceful harmony with nature. (Although somehow your guns and/or heavily armed airships are exempted from this.) |
Now this is a cliche that I hate. Why are technology users always EVIL CORRUPT GOVERNMENT BLAH BLAH BLAH and magic users always GOOD TREE-HUGGING HIPPIES WHO LOVE EVERYONE? Why not do it the other way around? Like, say the world this story takes place in operates under the Gaia hypothesis (that is, the belief that the Earth is a single living organism). Suppose the magic users get their power from the Earth's life force, and that their continued use of magic is draining the Earth, causing it to wither and die. And we're not talking just LOOKIT ME I CAN SHOOT FIRE OUT OF MY HANDS magic, these people use magic for everything. Getting to work, washing dishes, whatever. So the technology users are trying to save the Earth by giving up magic and finding alternate ways to do all the things they used to do with magic. So they invent cars, and washing machines, and guns for the people who miss shooting fire out of their hands. And ROBOTS gotta have robots. And they're trying to convert the magic users because if they don't the planet will DIE. Has anyone done something like that before? Because if not, I'd like to. |
Yes. Oh my, this would own. Incredible magic should come with a cost, like causing an entire planet to whither.
Or, along those same lines, how about a main villain who's basically an extreme environmentalist gone horribly wrong? Like, wants to exterminate the human race, because he or she feels that they're ruining the planet. And it's up to the guys with technology to stop a planet-wide genocide.
Oh, and most of these aren't exactly "cliches" per-se, but here's a website devoted to articles recurring elements in fiction. This is a link to the section on videogames:
Videogame Tropes - Television Tropes & Idioms
So, yeah. I guess it would be nice to see a subversion or two of some of the stuff in there. |

A tiny, usually glowing, fairy-like thing that follows you and annoys the living crap out of you.
Also, the person you aim to stop the ENTIRE GAME turns out to be a henchman for the REAL enemy. Like Sonic Rush Adventure |

This is a really big one, and for some reason, it gets on my nerves.
Any sentence with the word wake or awake in it, where the main character gets knocked out or passes out. For example:
Oh, you're awake! I thought you'd never wake up! Thank goodness, you're awake!

The starting level in a platformer is a forest/plain/grassland theme level. Eventually, a cave level, an ice level, and a fire level. |
