I like anime because it usually tends to have deeper plots than western cartoons, which I feel are more geared towards comedy and lighthearted-ness. Don't get me wrong, I love a good laugh, but stories of tragedy tend to draw me in more. I started watching anime at a young age {ended up growing up with Sailor Moon and Cardcaptors}, so I just kind of grew a love for it. I always dreamed about having magic powers and fighting bad guys and all that, so Sailor Moon and Cardcaptors {also known as Card Captor Sakura} ended up getting my attention.
Anyways, for suggestions.
If you're looking for a more deep and emotional anime {which also has various magical girl elements}, I suggest Uta~Kata. It's only 12 episodes long; so it wouldn't take too long to watch.
If you're looking for a more humorous anime {which has magical girl elements as well}; I suggest Dai Mahou Touge. However, I'd rate it [M] for excessive language and violence {and blood lulz}. There's only 8 episodes, which are about 12 minutes long for each, and a series of shorts {around four or five episodes} that are only about 2 minutes long.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the unbridled epic manliness saga of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. (Read in your manliest voice possible: "Tengen-Toppa! Gurren---LAGAAANN!") 27 episodes of pure undiluted hot-blooded awesome. The heroes are heroic! The villains are villainous! The mecha fights run on rule-of-cool! You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll shat bricks! And there's an absolutely brilliant theme behind all of that. WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM?
Oh, and I second the guy who recommended Martian Successor Nadesco. I can't say too much about the other recommendations, but Lucky Star is kinda like Azumanga in humor style, right? |

Actually, the only anime I can make any sense of is the Pokemon series. Specifically, D+P. Naruto almost makes sense to me, but all other anime go way over my head. |
