I've got a new obsession I've been chasing lately that involves the concept of "adaptation distillations." I love how cartoons like Batman: The Animated Series, The Spectacular Spider-Man, Transformers: Animated have taken large, sprawling, often contradictory universes and purified them into stand-alone universes that please both newcomers, kids, and longtime fans.

Now, if the Mario universe was condensed and purified into a new totally fun and totally awesome form (be it video game, cartoon, comic series, etc.) what individual elements (heroes, villains, plots, from the franchise would you include? How would you plot the series? How would you deal with Mario's flat character-ness?

I can think of seven characters I'd include . . .

Get Doopliss in it, then it will be perfect.

And Commander Shroob.

Yeah, I'll admit, I've never played any of the games with the Koopalings in them, but, I mean, what the hell, Nintendo? You don't just take seven fan-loved villains with personalities and throw them out the window! I think this blog post accurately depicts my feelings:

Waluigious: In Which I Imagine A Perfect World

And in addition to that, I'd like to see Bowser played as a pure evil, genre-savy supervillain. Don't get me wrong, I love the Mario RPG series, but I like Bowser best when he's not allied with the good guys or being pathetic, and I'd like to see him portrayed more like his SM64 and SMG versions. Give the role of an anti-hero to the Wario Bros. They haven't had a large role in a 1st-party Mario game lately.

And they should learn their lesson from their four other cartoon shows. NO NEW CHARACTERS, OOGTAR SUCKED BALLS.

Personally, I'd like to see Capcom help make it. They captured their personalities perfectly in MPT's intro.

Also, I'd like to see Count Bleck and Nastasia thrown in there, with Bowser being his SMG-version.

And YES to the Koopalings.

Yeah, you see, that's the thing I'm unsure about. I really liked SPM's storyline and characters, but I'm not sure you could have Count Bleck and Nastasia with Bowser as the main villain. I mean, the major part of Count Bleck's tale was a tragic love story, so Tippi would probably have to be in the cast somewhere. If it could be worked in without feeling awkward, then great, I'd love to see them again. I'm just saying it would be a little tricky with the focus on Bowser as the big bad.

Oh, and in addition to the Koopalings, I'd like to see Kammy and Kamek make an appearance. As maybe Bowser's attendants, representing superego and id, respectively! Some other minor RPG villains might be nice as a "rogue's gallery" of sorts. I've never played the M&L series, but I know Popple and Fawful are fan favorites.

And while Oogtar was an unlikable little shit, I don't think new characters are outright bad. The Mario franchise doesn't have nearly the same problems that the Sonic franchise does, where new games and cartoons are pumped out endlessly and new characters keep hogging the spotlight from the original cast. If you've got a horde of idiotic cavemen that you spend every other episode teaching to play football or enjoy Christmas, then yes, there's a problem. But if you need like, say, a grumpy old military advisor for the Mushroom Kingdom to contrast with Peach's more idealistic and ditzy leadership, I don't think that's such a problem. I don't know. I just don't feel like it's the end of the world if they need to create a minor character or two.

I think it should be a comedy, as Nintendo have proven they can be funny, but with a bit of drama.
Some exploring into Luigi/Mr L would be welcome.

(I would watch Super Paper Mario if it was a cartoon show awesome)
