I want to hate this movie, because it's really, really bad. The plot is a flimsy piece of swiss cheese; holes everywhere, the CGI quality alternates between decent and "wait, is this Beast Wars?", and sometimes the framerate drops to 12 FPS. Ewww.
I recall seeing Kaena a few years ago and thinking, "This would work so much better as a video game." After doing some research on it, I found out that it originally was going to be a game, but the studio making it got shut down, then it got moved to another studio, and turned into a movie. I also found out that it was made on a tiny budget, by a relatively small team of people, most of which had no filmmaking experience, using free software that was designed for making games. Knowing this, I can almost forgive it for sucking; making a decent-looking movie in a game engine would be hard. Doesn't excuse the awful writing, though.

It was also the first French CGI movie. Fascinating.
