When you read or hear the language, do you have to take a second to translate it in your head? Or do you just know what it means without thinking too hard? I'm wondering, especially for Japanese or Chinese.

I take French, btw. |

Translate in head takes a second or two = VERY YES
Especially for Japanese, since you can't tell what each character sounds like just by looking at it. After a while, you start to be able to recognize stuff, but it's still hard. *worrying about how hard next week's midterm is gonna be* |

I'm currently doing German, but I have done a fair bit of French over the past few years.
I can instinctively pick up on some words and phrases, but quite often I need to translate it. |

Larry actually has this one right. for the most part. If you are fluent in a language it should be second nature. but some people have a harder time reading or listening. even if they know the language and speak it/understand it fluently doesn't mean they can read/write it fluently. Vise versa.
I never could learn language outside of English. |

I'm gonna learn Latin. That way I'll know a little bit of any language I come across. Not the perfect plan, but oh well.
I already know Latin Stems. |

No, because English is the easiest language to learn. |

Not really. It just clicks in my head. And after you learn one language, it gets easier. |

I can speak my second language with no hesitation most of the times. One time or other I find myself at a loss for words, but I use my second language, like, everyday.
My second language is English. |

My second language is English, but I treat this language so often that I even think in it occasionally. I understand it immediatly. |

I have taken French for 4 years and I still at times find myself translating it in my head. Some things I have to think about and others I just know. It's hard to tell sometimes. |
