-> 0 Seriously. This is probably the only way to truly keep religion separate from Politics. We wouldn't have to throw away perfectly good acts that could benefit mankind because it's "against god's wishes", such as Stem-Cell Research. It would also be less distracting, since the president wouldn't have to think about religion and focus on the things that really matter.
This is not a "Discuss Religion" topic. Do not post here trying to convince me that god really exists. 0 -> |

Even though I'm christian, I still think this is the way to go. I agree fully with you. |

This sounds like a pretty good idea, but there's different kinds of Atheists...there are some that are just like "OMG I HATE GOD AND EVERYTHING INVOLVING RELIGION IT SHOULD BE DESTROYED" but there's others that just don't really care about religion. And really I think a lot of people wouldn't vote for a presidential candidate that's atheist, just because he's atheist. A lot of people would think that's a bad thing (probably for stupid reasons, but maybe some people would come up with good reasons why). But, yeah, I agree, having an atheist president probably would be a good idea, just as long as they're as responsible as any president should be, and don't let their beliefs affect their job. |

You may not realize it, but you're stereotyping heavily, because not all Christians (Or other religious people) mix their faith with their work. Having an Atheist President that's intent on disproving religion is just as bad as having a Christian president trying to force religion in public schools.
So, having an Atheist President won't really matter, because there are plenty of atheist crazies, just as there are plenty of religious crazies. We just need a President that keeps his work and personal religious beliefs separate from his politics, finding logic and reasoning that can apply to people of all faiths to back up his beliefs instead. You can keep your faith, but also back up your politics with secular reasons, as well.
Also, I can assure you, things such as stem-cell research or abortion are not disliked just for religious reasons. Some people find them unethical because they believe that such practices destroy human life (Not that I think that way about stem-cell research; I do support it. Abortion, I don't really hold a definite stance on.) |

Disagreed. America was built upon Christianity and Christians will lead it. A Christian president is definately better than an atheist president, because Christians have clearer morals. And good morals, or else not every civilized country would've based it's laws from the Bible. |

This is just as bad as what the thread starter suggested. This country wasn't strictly built upon Christianity; rather, one of its early reasons for existing was the desire to be free of such strict religious rule. Also, what of morals? Are they not based merely upon perspective? An atheist can have the equivalent of "morality," but he bases his morals on logic, rather than age-old tradition. Also, I can assure you- much of the civilized world's nations are secular. That doesn't necessarily mean their atheist; just that they keep their religion and their politics separate.
I'd also like to point out that, if a country is a country, it is civilized. A group of people that are uncivilized wouldn't have government, massive cities, or other good things. of that nature And, certainly, many nations in this world are not based on the Bible. Japan certainly wasn't, yet it still serves as a powerhouse for technological innovation. |

Alright, Sims said he didn't want this to turn into a religious debate, but I have to ask you; Do you believe that immoral things are considered immoral because God says they are, or were those things already bad, and God just doesn't want you to have anything to do with them? If the former, then morality is completely subjective. If the latter, what makes you think atheists wouldn't be able to figure out on their own that murder/thievery/etc. is bad?
To be a bit more on-topic; I don't completely disagree with you, Sims, but I see nothing wrong with having a Christian president (or a president of any other religion), as long as they keep their beliefs separate from their work. Of course, if a presidential candidate made the fact that they are atheist public, they'd lose a lot of potential votes. Sad but true. |
