It has been one of the most strange days of my life.

This morning, when I entered school, and had engaged in a little conversation I was asked - "Haven't you heard ?" And I asked "What ?" - and I get explained that a student from one grade above me, a fellow IB student, died last night...

It was very strange. When we had registration, our class teacher was sobbing, and at first I didn't even notice. She told us we'd have an assembly the very first lesson. And we had one. It was very sad. All the Grade 12's, those that had lost the person, wore black. I felt. unfitting; I hadn't known and wore some weird brownish clothes. I also was kind of angry - how could I not have known ?

The assembly went over, and Grades 10, 11 and 12 were asked to stay. One student from Grade 12 then read an orbituary. It was touching.

And then, in the rest of the lesson and lesson two, we talked... about loss, the emotional and philosophical impacts. I talked about my dead Grandmother, and my other Grandmother, who is what one sarcastically refers to as a "vegetable" and, because of a lung infection, could die at any time. And I realized how much I repressed that.

The assembly, too, was strange - so many people were crying, students, teachers. Nobody made a noise; even the low grades were deadly silent... It made my school seem kind of warmer, closer, my teachers more human.

In the second lesson the jerk from my grade, who had on the way to school blocked the street when I was kickboarding past, chewed bubblegum. In my mind, I committed him to a date with Chtulhu.

And later on, I realized I was pretty much over it. I completed mourning in one school day. I had cut out several of the seven stages.

My English teacher, who was the class teacher of one of the Grade 12's apologized and said he was unable to teach. We had a free lesson.
My maths teacher sent a replacement; she was the former IB Coordinator and knew them well, as well.

I didn't even know the person. The name didn't ring a bell, I had no face in mind. When I looked at the photowall that'd been set up near the candles and flowers, I didn't recognize him. And yet, even though I was very remote... I was honestly grieving. For the loss of a chance to meet a new person. I felt sad for other's sadness, sympathized and remembered my own losses... It was strange, mourning the mourning... I didn't nkow him, but the pain of others - It hurt so much.

Later on, somebody told me he'd been run over by a train as he stood to close to the tracks when a freight train speeded through.

That had been where he lived -

at the train station in my own hometown, opposite the rails which I ride on to school.

Strange day, indeed...

Did you even know this kid, because if you didn't I wouldn't be surprised if you go mourning over in a day.

I know how you feel about grieving for a person you never really met. I had a leader in our youth group at our church who was hit by a 18-wheeler. I didn't know him by name, but as soon as I saw the picture, I realized how hard it hit me. Just to know the face and see that it would be missing from the faces I see every sunday hit a pit in my stomach.

Sorry for your loss.

Yes, Popple, as I stated numerous times I had no idea who he was. And as I personally said I got over it very quickly. Thanks for your TL;DR. Or not.

The others... thanks. It's still weird, and that guy from his grade is sitting next to me right now.
