Of all the old sports games that I liked, Blue Marlin for the Nintendo Entertainment System was not only the best, but the scariest and most unpredictable sports games there was, IMO. You enter a fishing tournament in four locations (one in Florida, three in Hawaii) to catch the Best fish. These fish are, of course, the blue marlin, black marlin, sword fish, and sailfish. Other fish include the Dolphin (Dorado), Barracuda, tuna, and sharks. the mechanics of this game are simple: Drive your boat and hook a fish. When fighting the fish, keep an eye on the fish portrait so you can see signs that the fish is tired or when the line is gonna break. Reel in the fish and when it is close to the boat the screen will change to show you that you caught the fish, then see the weight of it and attributes you might have earned. During the fight, there will always be scenarios. Some you have to make decisions in, like the Marlin snagging the line onto the motor. Some where it justs happens, like a shark eating your catch (but if your lucky, you just might hook the shark). The reason I consider this game so scary is that the music for the scenarios and the images can make you wet yourself. But music for fighting the fish gives you the adrenaline and and suspense you need. All in all this is one hardcore NES sports game. The Blue Marlin for the NES gets a 9 out of 10. |
