Or lock the door and place a knife in their hand so it seems like suicide. |

That only works if you live in a poor area and the family isn't rich. |

you should probably think what would be a better thing to do, Giving no gift could send a message, but giving a freaking awesome gift sends a louder message.
or you could get him a tie or something. its the thought that counts after all. |

Greed is human nature. its natural to want more and to want your neighbor to have less,I suppose there is a whole dominance Issue as well jumbled in there some wheres. for my final answer I'd say its a mix of culture and instinct.

don't be so paranoid. be yourself. some people may hate you for it others may respect you for it.
I wont put a mouth on the community. because its not my place to do so. if you must weigh yourself like this do it on a case by case basis. don't assume everyone likes or dislikes you. |
