My brother believes that Mega Man X is Mega Man, just improved. I claim that the two are separate entities.
Mega Man X was built to be a superior version of Mega Man. He was designed and under construction while Mega Man was still active, or at least it is assumed so. The exact date is uncertain, but he was made during the later age of the original Mega Man series (note: this was long before Mega Man 9, so that game, for this argument, does not exist).
Mega Man is a robot, although Dr. Light's interaction would imply at that Mega Man is intelligent or has the personality of a human boy. Mega Man X is a highly sophisticated robot, to the point that he can seem almost human. Regardless of whether they are truly separate, let us suppose that Mega Man's memories and CPU were transfered into the superior X design. This transference would change Mega Man from a robot into a near-human android. These new abilities and greater functions might be shocking, and the emotions he could now truly feel might cause him confusion. This could be the reason for Dr. Light's insistence on running programming checks on X for thirty years.
However, thirty years (and more, considering that Dr. Cain found him many years later and waited another thirty to activate X) is a long time. Even if Mega Man was X, X would had developed his own personality by this point. In either case of whether or not Mega Man is X or if they are separate, Mega Man is dead by then.
What do you guys think? Is Mega Man and X the same robot (mentally or otherwise) or are they two individuals? |

Megaman and X are different robots. Prime example: Megaman is a boy who is turned into a robot IIRC, X is a full-fledged robot.
Look up "Day of Sigma" on youtube, it's a cartoon showing the events just before MMX1 started, and it shows Dr. Light concealing X underground as his latest creation who was "so advanced he was afraid humanity just wasn't ready yet."
Simply put, Megaman is the same thing as X like Bass is the same thing as Zero. The only real similarity is that they have the same creators.
EDIT: After a brainfart, I think I remember Megaman being a robot as well. I'm confused. I forget what the hell MM was...
EDIT AGAIN: After finally thinking, I remember megaman is a robot. I hate my memory. Anyway, prime example that they are two different creations is the fact that A: I hear that there is an added scene in one of the Megaman games where Dr. Light apologizes to Megaman for creating another version of him, hidden in the MM Anniversary Collection. And B: In Day of Sigma, it shows Dr Light building X in several moments in time. By the time he actually DOES finish building him, he's a sickly old man that can barely move without a walking stick. Not quite an upgrade to the old Megaman unless Light comepletely disassembled him, as the first construction scene shows X as pretty much a head with a torso.
Oh, and by the way, his name isn't Mega Man X. It is actually just "X", I think "Mega Man" was slapped on the title so people knew what it was. |

Says the guy who follows the trend of using Squidward as an Avatar.
X is obviously a separate robot, different from MegaMan, who is programmed to have the true potential. How should I know? I need to watch the Day of Sigma. |

Well, to continue the subject of his name, thank about it: Has another character ever referred to X as "Megaman" or "Megaman X"? Every bit of dialogue I've seen, even from the fanciful-type villains that wouldn't really use a nickname, he has always been called just "X".
Oh, and another piece of evidence just came to mind. Take a look at the other series of MM games: Megaman Zero, and Megaman ZX as the prime examples. Is it Megaman in those? Don't really think so... |

I haven't completed the series for myself yet, so I won't make an attempt at the question until then.

Like the other posts said, X is not Megaman in that case. I honestly don't know as much about the series like most of you, but I am sure of that, if anything. |
