I didn't put nearly enough thought into this. This started out as me dicking around in RMVX in an attempt to learn the program and eventually evolved into something big, but as such, it totally skipped the conceptual stage and went RIGHT into development. It's just too ambitious for its own good. I'll be starting from scratch on another project, but I'll be doing a lot of work on that before I even open up VX. I might come back to Oceanus in the far future since I still like the concept, but that won't be for a good while.

I'd consider making an RPG, but I don't know how to make an event happen only once, so that if you come back to the same map again, it doesn't have to happen again.

So, all my RPGs are messed up because the story events keep replaying if you go back to a town.

Learn how to use switches. All events in RMXP or VX have four self-switches labeled A to D. Turn one on with a command just before "erase event," then click "New Event Page" at the top, leave that page blank, and set it so that it needs self switch A to be on to appear. Make sure it's the highest numbered page, too, because it uses the highest number if all conditions are met.
If you don't understand something, right-click and click "What's this?" That, along with just screwing around, is the best way to learn how to use the program.

Okay, I pretty much get it, but what happens if I need more than switches A-D?

And why is VX's music of worse quality than XP?! That makes no sense! >:U

I have 2003, XP, and VX... I'm surprised I never figured out how to fully use any of them. XD

It looked that way, sure, but it wasn't thought out at all, really. It didn't even have a plot (though I was just planning on making the plot hilariously bad anyway). I'm working on another project, and I've written a lot down on paper and spent a good amount of time planning it out. I haven't even opened VX since (my trial ran out anyway, so I need to either mooch off my parent's credit card or ask Much Music why the hell I can't log into my account to fill up my prepaid mastercard). This is definitely not going to go the way of Catastrophe and Oceanus.

Yeah... I hate VX's RTP music except for a select few tracks. It's much easier to make XP's RTP music fit the mood. Oh well, I'm using a custom soundtrack anyway; rather than ripping it from games like most RM games do, I'm taking it from Newgrounds. Everything on the audio portal is free to use, and there's a lot of talent there.
Also, if you run out of self switches, cut into the universal switches. You've got an unlimited number of switches that can affect any event; self switches are just to keep that list from getting cluttered if you need to make a cutscene or chest disappear. Just use the "control switches..." event command.

Have you used the older RPG Makers before? If not, I highly suggest trying them out for at least a test game, and go on from there. It's not as hard if you play with them before moving on to VX.

If you have though, guess you can ignore this post. :B

One problem that REEEEALLLY bugs me for some reason is the continents. You want me to help you work on that? Because they look really fake, and I for one, do NOT like that. I've worked on several revamps of overworlds in games, such as re-making an AD 1999 map for Chrono Trigger, and changing around some stuff in Final Fantasy IV and V.

Like I said, I'll probably come back to it once I'm done with my current project, and I appreciate feedback.
The world map looks so blocky because I'm using RMVX's default graphics. I might get some custom tilesets in the future.

I actually like the blockiness... I think it's a good reminder of RPG past.
