The closest thing that I got to that was when I was a toddler, playing Yoshi's Island and stuff of the sort.

Genres always existed, and they always will. Games aren't "just games;" saying that is like saying that a comedy and a drama are "just movies." Without classification, the industry would be a mess, as people wouldn't know what games suit their tastes.

Cid brings up a point above me, since there were tons of different genres. during the time when 'games were just games'. And hard ones to boot, maybe even harder than a lot of stuff nowadays(Ever fought Shinryu? That thing would probably be The Hardest Boss of the 1990's.)

I guess a lot of people now just look at how flashy a game is. That kinda saddens me, since that's like looking at a da Vinci/van Gogh painting and saying it's dull and looking at a seizure-inducing picture and saying it's awesome.

Lies. Without "Hardcore" Or "Casual" concepts, flame war counts would obviously go down, and there's actually nothing that these idiotic concepts add to the table of life. Genres are OK, but they're not absolutely needed, because some preteen dickbrain is bound to claim Halo and other FPSes were the best thing that came to earth, and that'd torture us with... Well, brains.

I was referring to the hardcore and casual classifications, not the specific genres.

So, we should consider Buzztime Trivia of a rank equal to Ocarina of Time?

How are they not absolutely needed? I'd rather have a variety of shooters, RPGs, platformers, action-adventures, and the like instead of every game being a clone of Super Mario Bros., and I'd rather be able to easily be able to distinguish a type of game I don't like (Sports-based games) from one I do (RPGs or action-adventures.)

Hardcore and casual games are two basic genres upon which most games fall under; further classification is attributed to them based upon the more commonly used genres.
