I'm guessing they use the board movement to get around the story. And there are gonna be Hero v.s Hero battles, the one I saw a small portion of was Squall v.s. Warrior of Light.
Edit: And if you've seen any of the other gameplay videos, Garland's sword is freaking huge. I'm gonna guess that he's the slower version of Ike for this game.

Final Fantasy is lower on the list than you may think. And I bet you've never even PLAYED Dissidia, or even seen someone play it close up. I've obtained it, and played it, and it's a very, very impressive fighting game. VERY.
