In what promises to be a rockin' good battle, guitar legend Joe Satriani is suing the world's biggest band, Coldplay, for plagiarism.
He claims the British band, fronted by Chris Martin, ripped off one of his tunes for their Grammy-nominated hit Viva La Vida
Satriani is seeking a jury trial, damages and "any and all profits" attributed to the single, which he believes incorporates "substantial original portions" of his 2004 instrumental If I Could Fly.
Damn, I can hear it pretty well... I'm not a big fan of Coldplay, but I don't exactly hate them either.
I think he might win.
This, although I find it rather stupid how he is sueing over 25 seconds. I mean, why don't all the metal bands go psycho on each other for having the same main riff in a lot of songs (i.e. Thrasher vs. Raining Blood)?
So, 25 seconds isn't a HUGE part of the song, and, furthermore, there have been some songs that totally rip off an entire tune by someone else (i.e. Ghostbusters Theme vs. Huey Lewis Song).
Coldplay is going to win. That sound almost nothing like Viva la Vida, and either way, it's 25 seconds, and completely different genre, and Viva la Vida has lyrics. There's a pretty huge difference. Besides, if he just waited 'till NOW to sue, you can tell he was just looking for a way to get some money.
