This website wrote: | WASHINGTON, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- A virulent computer virus has infected as many as 15 million computers around the world so far, according to various estimates.
The virus -- a self-replicating computer worm known as Downadup, Conficker or Kido -- spreads across computer networks using Microsoft Windows software which have not been patched or updated properly. Microsoft issued a patch that fixes the vulnerability the virus exploits last October.
The Independent on Sunday newspaper said in London at the weekend that more than 3,000 British organizations, including hospitals and the Ministry of Defense, have been hit by the virus.
But U.S. computer security firm Symantec noted on its blog last week that very few computers in North America had been infected, a trend which it attributed to the greater prevalence of legal and fully patched software.
"China, India and Russia all have a high percentage of pirated software in use and these countries also feature in the top 10 countries (for) Downadup infections," said the blog. "The lack of patching due to piracy may be a contributory factor to high infection rates in those countries," the blog concluded.
The Independent on Sunday said as many as 15 million computers worldwide had been infected, but most other estimates are in the 8 million to 12 million range. Helsinki-based Internet security software firm F-Secure said on its blog infections may have peaked.
Security experts say the virus' purpose is still unclear and the network of infected computers it has created has yet to be activated. Most such malicious software is used by criminal gangs to send spam or launch so-called denial of service attacks.
The virus primarily spreads through unpatched Windows networks, but computers can also become infected via a USB flash drive.
To protect themselves, users should download Microsoft patch MS08-067 and update their antivirus software. | This thing looks dangerous. I wonder what the creators are gonna do with all those computers. Probably either download loads of other nasties or kill all of the computers at once. |

Yeah; it disguised itself as the "open folder" prompt in the Windows popup. Look:
Aw, can't find the picture off BBC. It was the nrmal popup, but under "Install / Run programs" there was "Open folder to view files", "published by Microsoft Corporation". You wouldn't notice in a hurry and BAM you're a zombie PC.
I love having Kaspersky.
Anyway, BBC alo had the headline "FBI fights zombie hordes", and that, is awesome, even though it's just PCs. |

So... it's a virus that infects computers but doesn't do anything until the creators activate it... and it's already infected millions. It's Y2K all over again, folks. We're doomed. ФֻФ |

So...the new post was basically an updated number involving those lazy people that didn't update?
Oh yay M'aiq's compy is updated, looks like it's time to buy something he doesn't like. |

No. I resent that statement. It's already been released that there is a patch for it. It was released in October. Windows computers aren't vulnerable as long as they have this patch. I am Lord Bob, and I am a Mac hater. |

Considering I'm in North America, and I only have ONE computer connected to the internet, I'm going to assume I'm fine.
Or I misread it completely. |

Yeah, M'aiq enjoys the fact that Macs are getting attacked now. Maybe now those Mac glorifiers won't pretend to be so smug about having one.
EDIT @ HPP: Viruses on Windows started with just a small handful as well. With current technology, and the massive legions of malware developers, it'll probably only take a year or two for the Mac to almost require antivirus systems. |

Look at iJailbreak. That, in itself, is technically a virus. A program intended to activate a chain of various events eventually leading to a different use. Though not in the traditional sense, it is perfectly plausible to make a virus for Macs, its just that no one has really bothered to make one that stands out. |
