A good portion of the upper-most area of his skull was ripped off, but somehow the Koopa was still alive in spite of the exposed brain. |

Because the injured Koopa had managed to stand up, Beta's teeth had sunk into his shell instead of chowing down on the exposed bits of brain.. |
