Sonic the Hedgehog is in dire need of a true revival. Here's how I think the serious would be vastly improved, and how it can be returned to its glory days.

1. Get rid of all the sidekicks. Seriously. Go back to just Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Robotnik. Maybe the occasional Metal Sonic. Amy Rose and Big the Cat cameo possibilities, as well, but nothing more. Sega seems to think that they can keep the series fresh by inflating it with more characters, but that's never the way to fix the problem.

2. No more ridiculous story-arcs. No more Sonic clones and their tormented pasts. It just doesn't work for games starring cartoony, anthromorphic animals. Now, you see, let's look at the Mario Bros. series. Did Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, or Super Mario Galaxy have any of that? Of course not, but they're still viewed as awesome games. Did the 3D Sonics attempt to tell stories? Yes, but alot of them aren't viewed in a very swell way. I do agree that story-telling is important in the world of videogames, but there's only so much you can do for a blue hedgehog wearing bright red sneakers. The best bet for mascot franchises (That weren't founded on story-telling) is to fine-tone gameplay and level design, while leaving story-telling to a minimum (To ensure maximum enjoyability for both the franchise's target audience as well as the old fans.)

Originally, Sonic wasn't built on story-telling. The Genesis canon- Sonic 1, 2, 3, Knuckles, and CD- was built on awesome level-design and gameplay. And those titles are still viewed as the best in the series.

3. No more slowing Sonic down. Sonic is about zipping through environments at blazing speeds, not about turning in to a "werehog" to beat-up everything in sight. There's a reason why most critics and fans praise the speedy portions of newer Sonic games but thrash the games for its slow segments. Keep the series to what it's good at.

I'll probably come up with more reasons later, but for now, these are the major changes that I think needs to be made to the series that came to mind first.

Flavio thinks they should keep Amy, Big, and the Chaotix but yeah all the other newer characters could go die in a hole.

Oh, and even though it doesn't fit in with the whole speediness aspect that should be in Sonic games it would be nice to have the Chao gardens again.

Indeed. Chaos were undeniably awesome.

Or, MAKE THEM MORE LIKE SONIC ADVENTURE 2.

Seriously, I bought that game months before I even had a Gamecube, and I still play it today.

Yeah, the Chao Garden was quite fun. Sonic Adventure 2 [Battle] is great. ^^ I liked it, and I don't even hate the character Shadow, though I did really really dislike that game of his own that he got. xx

Anyway, I agree with Cid's suggestions, if they focused on those things I'm very sure I'd like the Sonic games a lot more these days.

Funny part is, Sonic Unleashed followed 1 1/2 to 2 of those tips.
It only had Sonic, Tails, Amy, and a new character that wasn't as annoying as most others, and the story was actually Intricatese for "Collect Chaos Emeralds(It's their POWER, but still.), beat fatass scientist while dealing with fairly decent voice acting."Rather than "Collect Chaos Emeralds ten times over while dealing with bad voiceacting" or "Save Princess, Collect Chaos Emeralds and erase this disaster [of a game] from memory while dealing with half assed voice acting"

Recent games like Unleashed and Secret Rings were what you call "speedy."
I agree on the first one. I would love to see a Sonic game with only Sonic and Eggman. NO ONE else. (maybe Tails and Knuckles for the sake of having them, thats it)

And I read the review for Sonic and the Black Knight that IGN provided. I'll just wait until April, maybe May to get the game, now. Times are tough, and seeing as I'm an adult, I have to buy my own medicine, because personal health is MORE important than Sonic the Hedgehog! GIVE ME DRAGON QUEST V, because choosing a wife to fight alongside you is MORE important than Running at mach speeds with a sword (unless you play as Stylish Alastor).
