THE 101 TO CIVILIZED DIGIBUTTERIAN LIFE
(Ha, made you read the same thing twice.)

What's this, you ask? Well, it's a 101. A basic course, a tutorial. But a 101 to what? Civilized Digibutterian life (Ha, made you read the same thing three times). Since we have many newbies everyday, as well as several members that find themselves in the bottom of a spiked well wondering why, this guide aims to lend tips for people to become at least less annoying.

TIP #1 - They aren't talking about you except if otherwise is OBVIOUSLY stated.

Some people, mostly in the past, have often been unable to take a joke correctly because they thought themselves specifically were meant to be mocked by it, when that was not the intention. Well, to avoid falling into that trap, there are some ideals that help.

First, USE YOUR COMMON SENSE. If it's OBVIOUSLY not about you, then it's NOT about you.
Then, avoid taking personal offense to it if it mocked a group you belong in. If they say, for example, "/b/tards are [insert joke here]", and you are a /b/tard, please take it on stride. However, if they downright bashed your group (e.g. "/b/tards absolutely fail at life and everythign else"), you have a right to be offended. Usually. Keep Tip #2 in mind when this happens.
Lastly, really, only take personal offense to it if it was pointed straight at YOU. If they said your name, or referred to something only you have (e.g. if my avatar is a red sheep with a fuse during Armageddon, I can take it that they meant me if they say "like certain people with red sheep with fuses during Armaggedon on the avatar"), then they probably meant you.

BUT, one last thing. If your name was clearly said, hover your mouse over it. If a red background pops up around your name, relax. It's a special tag that says the name of whoever is reding the post. To show you how it works, I'll just say your name. Guest. See? I have no idea who the hell are you, but, the tag did all the dirty work.

TIP #2 - No feeding the trolls.

Internet is a place some people love because your acts bring no consequences. The kind of person that most takes advantage of this truth is known as "Troll". Trolls are merely people who find it extremely fun to piss people off.

Some of them are quite protuse and obvious; others are sneakier and the truth about them might never ever come out.

When dealing with these, the winning move is not to play. Really. The people that need my guide are usually the ones who wind up feeding trolls. The best thing to do to avoid them is, since you never know who is a troll, not take any real offence to whatever people say. If you get extremely pissed off by something that was said, you might just have wandered into the trap they wanted you in.

TIP #3 - Common sense gets your posts read.

Most of us people are too lazy to read all that comes up in a topic, and we don't have the time to. So, we MUST skip some of'em.

How do you get your post not ignored? Well, use your common sense. People won't bother if your post is just basically in full agreement with what somebdoy else already said. We usually try to reads posts that pertain to the topic, and that add to it. Of course, nothing wrong with putting together all the ideas that were presented, but it's needless if too few ideas were presented.

By the way, except in serious topics and some completely joking ones, people also won't bother with both extremes of post size. If your post is too small, it's easily assumed to be useless to the topic; if your post is too huge, nobody will bother reading it.

TIP #ONE BAZILLION - Don't take virtual punishment too seriously.

REALLY. This is one thing that really helps us pit you into "annoying" category or "good to go" category. Though I'm not sure whether all the perfectly fine people in Digi don't take the strike system too seriously.

Please, what the hell is the problem if you got striked? It doesn't hurt, it doesn't prive you of any important rights. There's no need to whine and rage if you were striked.

And that's also a good thing to keep in mind when choosing to plead Not Guilty/Guilty. We have had an enormous load of obviously guilty people trying to get off the hook. For what reason? Doing that does nothing but waste our time and make us slam tables.

TIP #13 - Speak English.

No, we don't get people speaking Espaņol or Deustuch (Did I get that right?) often. I'm talking about something else.

When I say English, I mean English. Correctly spelt and grammared English. Well, no need for nitpicking; just UNDERSTANDABLE English is enough.

We don't like it when somebody starts going chtspeke or 13375|>34|< (Trans.: Leetspeak) on us. We like our posts READABLE, thank you. nothing wrong with not using caps all the time, or wiht typos that hmuan beigns juts do. The point that pissess us off is when we simply can't read a chunk of the text.

TIP #14 - Grammar Nazism kills jews.

Like I said in Tip #13, we don't nitpick around posts that don't speak perfect and impeccable English, we just like our posts understandable.

"We", however, is most of us. There are exceptions.

If you are capable of speaking good English over internet, oh, what a prowess, what a genius. But there's no need to rub it on our faces. We don't need a nitpick reminding us of where we went gramatically wrong.

It gets particularly irritating if you make your share of human mistakes but still want to correct ours. It happened before, believe that.

TIP #23 - Nothing maturer than knowing HOW TO TAKE A JOKE DAMMIT

The biggest part, if not the entirety of our not-so-liked members have earned their places by not abiding by this tip.

Really, we are weirdos with little-to-no measure of what we say. That's why I, at least by the time this guide was written, have "RRRRAAAAGGGGEEEE" for a screenname. If you want to do well with us, you need to respect our jokes. Just play along.

There aren't many ways to tell you how to do it. You just do it. If you are a mature person, certainly, you CAN do it.

TIP #34 - Read the rules

This forum's rules are available in the Intro section, and there's also one that is most probably going to become official, if not already official, in Feedback. If you didn't read them yet... READ DAMMIT

If you know the rules, you'll know measures you can take not only to avoid being punished, but ALSO to not piss us off. Okay, we don't get mad at you for some light flooding here or some flaming there. But some rules are actually there to avoid some sorts of behavior that are frowned upon.

So, just knock yourself over. Really, I don't need to add anything to this tip. The rules topic will do the dirty work for me.

TIP #46 - Criticism is golden; you're seriously not going to throw gold away, are you?

This entire 101 is about critique. I am criticizing behaviors we often get, and don't particularly care for. And guess what? You're reading it!

If you're not doing well in the social ladder, learn to use anything that gets thrown at you. If somebody says there's something you need to improve on, listen to them.

Of course, you also have to be a bit selective with who you take advice from. If you've been here for six months you'll hardly be needing advice from a guy who joined today. But, still, don't be too selective; even if it sounds like they said it just to piss you off, still listen to it.

TIP #50 - If you say leave, you LEAVE

Several of our good old members have left the forums. A good part of them came back, too. That's perfectly fine.

What we don't like about people leaving, is when they don't live up to the word at all. If you said "I am going to leave Digibutter", shoo. Go away. And don't come back for a month or so.

Honestly, we've had enough of empty leaving threats. Keep in mind that, except if you are close to somebody, this somebody won't give two shits if you leave. Most probably.

TIP #69 - Your adress ain't your only private detail.

Ah, you see porn, don't you? Well, whether you do or not, I honestly can't think of a reason to care.

But, well, not all of us will like it if you up and say that you, um... like to see human-on-beast porn. Oh, I bet you didn't like my example, did you.

Basically, just use your sense of inner censorship. You should be able to tell when something is just too much information for us.

TIP #92 - Nobody cares about your opinion.

The title sounds a bit too harsh, but, well, you take ME seriously at your own risk.

Anyway. Basically, the tip here is to, once more, use your sense of inner censorship. Try keeping your personal opinion to topics that appreciate it. And even further, avoid opining about something that isn't what the topic wants you to opine on, except if it's being derailed, of course.

But most importantly: If you're going to say your opinion, then say it in a way that it's more than just your opinion. Keep Tip #3 in mind; if you just say "Me too!" to a post and nothing else, well, not only you'll get ignored, but possibly, striked for spam. Add substance to your opinion.

-----

Well, I guess that's it. For now, at least. If you know of any other things I should be adding, speak up. I abide by Tip #46.

Oh, and, while criticizing, please keep Tip #1 in mind. None of the tips were meant to hit specific people.

I love you now.

But seriously, this should be stickied somewhere near the rules.

Now now, don't get too hasty. I'm waiting to see if I need to correct something, or add something.

This would have to be perfected before being exposed in an easy access spot.

Oh, the official rules are actually in Intro's. The ones in Feedback are suggestions, unless they've been fully passed.

I have to agree - nobody cares about your opinion. Or mine. So we are stuck in a meta-recursive logical loop.

Anyone up for pizza ?
