They took a slightly different angle at my school...

First they had videos of 'typical' teenagers meeting up, having sex, etc.

Then the next lesson, things were turned slightly on their head when we were tasked with making a Powerpoint presentation of, you guessed it, STDs, pictures compulsory.

I guess shock tactics work too.

My school has posters constantly being put up that literally have "ABSTINENCE" written on them, and a bunch of fake statistics (I'd know, because my English teacher is against the posters, and was at the meeting that was held). I found one on my locker one day. I tore it down and threw it away, and got a detention for it.

Thank God my English teacher loves me. She got me out of trouble.

You might wanna think about wording...
EDIT: No, abstinence only is horrible.
My wording is fine. I obviously didn't mean it in the literal sense.

My sex ed. only spent one day on abstinence. I found the information about protection, where to go, stds, and all that other shit a lot more educational. :U

Better off letting them know just what it is than trying to make it sound evil.

I agree, however, nowadays 5 year olds know about all that. So it's not really a necessity.

In my health class, we had a guy come in for about five days to talk to us about sex.
It was all pretty much "LOL CONDOMS DO NOT WORK THE ONLY WAY TO BE HEALTHY IS TO ABSTAIN NOW HERE'S SOME PICTURES OF DISEASED PINGAS' AND VAGAGI'S TO PROVE MY POINT."
Or something to that effect, I didn't exactly like him too much.

Anyways, while Abstinence is the safest option, teenagers hardly practice it anymore. While you can go ahead and teach it, don't make it your main point, as no one will really listen.

Now see, that's where you are wrong. Christians don't believe sex is the devil. They believe that sex should be confined to marriage. It's because sex is pretty much the act of giving yourself to someone else, and you should only do that with the person you plan on spending eternity with. In many respects, I agree with the logic, but for more or less logical reasons. I believe that you probably SHOULDN'T have sex before you are married, because, at least then, if something goes HORRIBLY wrong by the off-chance, the person won't abandon you. However, ONLY teaching abstinence is completely out of the question. Children must be informed of ALL forms of protection, whether the school likes it or not. That is they way things should be.

Also, most schools are run by liberals, just so you know. Most of the country is. Don't be so quick to judge people based off of stereotypes next time. It's disgusting.

You guys do know that there was a study done. One group of kids was taught abstinence only, the other was taught condom use. Guess which group was more likely to use condoms while having sex? The group that was taught abstinence only. It makes sense when you think about it. People are going to know what a condom is whether they are taught in school or not. From their parents, from other kids, from the internet, T.V. commercials, whatever. Once a kid is old enough to have a chance to have sex, they know what a condom is, regardless of what he was taught. Now if the kid was taught abstinence he is more likely to use condom, because he is more aware of what he is doing because he was taught NOT to do it his whole life. This may not be the nicest way to go about doing it, but its the safest. Yes they may lie to you when saying its wrong to have sex, but its not any worse than your parents lying to you about Santa Claus or the Easter bunny in the long run, it helps you out.

The only reasonable explanation is human error. It is quite likely that the abstinence only students were more responsible for their actions, where as those that weren't were rather irresponsible. Since no two humans are alike, such a test, by its very nature, is flawed.

Studies are almost always done with a wide variety of people, with different backgrounds, and in this case probably morals, or morals of their parents. It's a possibility what you said could be the case, but you can't really say for sure, it's probably more unlikely though.

No, as a matter of fact, the odds that it's likely is 50%, as is the odds that it's unlikely.

Human error can still occur, and unless you can present accurate information on this study, we will not know what the general error was. Studies are usually done randomly, as well. They could have rigged the odds in their favor by placing the more responsible students in the abstinence-only classes, and the more irresponsible ones in the other class to prove their points. The possibilities for this study to be quite flawed are actually near-endless, highly because of the randomized subjects used for it.

I wish I could provide more information to you, but unfortunately the study was mentioned to me by my photography teacher. He's a die-hard liberal so I assume he wouldn't make something like this up. I'm not sure but the study was most likely done by a university, with the purpose of finding information, not with the purpose to falsely influence the country to change their opinions to more Christian values.

I dunno if my opinion has been posted in this thread, and I don't wanna skim to find out. I'm sure there's enough smart people on these forums to the point where I'll just be reiterating here.
But anyway.

I think it's more sensible to teach safe sex rather than abstinence.
Let's face it: Teens are going to do what they want, despite what you tell them. There isn't anything school boards can do to keep them from having sex, so they might as well make sure that they are least being responsible.
