For Game Maker games that use MP3's (like "Lost Universe) you have to associate MP3's with Windows Media Player (WMP) or the games will crash as soon as they try to play the MP3's.

Open WMP > go to Tools > then Options > File Types > put a check mark next to MP3 > OK > and close WMP.

Now Game Maker games that use MP3's should no longer crash when you play them.

I had the same problem you did, and at first I couldn't figure out what was wrong.

But I began to suspect that the MP3's were the problem, so I asked somebody who'd made a recent GM game to take out the MP3's so I could test my theory, and sure enough, the game worked fine once the MP3's were removed.

After further investigation & experimentation, I figured out how to fix the problem--by associating WMP with MP3's.

Don't ask me why this works...maybe GM uses WMP to play MP3's? I dunno.,,but believe me, this will solve the problem you're having getting GM games to play.

It worked. This explains why Hop's Sensational Adventure worked but nothing else would; Game Maker actually plays MP3s through Windows Media Player. Why it would do that is beyond me, but at least I can play GM games now. ФֻФ

It can't play MP3s by itself.

Brb, smacking the guy that programmed the music aspect.

Can and will do.
I'll also consider using GM now that I realize I can test my games. How hard would it be to make a turn-based strategy in GM? ФֻФ

Pretty hard. Game Maker RPGs require an assload of variables. :C

Can't be too difficult. I was already planning on making a custom battle system in RMVX with events, and this might even be easier than that. ФֻФ
