I've just been thinking, it's pretty hard to make final bosses in FPSs, because they have to be beatable while there is an ammo restriction, and not too difficult/puzzle solve-y for the same reason.
How do you think they should be played out? Should they even exist?

(Inspiration from watching 'Killing 22 final bosses in 5 minutes')

If the FPS had, say, one weapon with no ammo restriction that you maybe start with or forcefully get later on (I.E., you can't skip getting it), then every weapon you have that requires ammo would be taken away, forcing you to use the weapon that has no restrictions on ammo.

Another way of doing it is to have the boss drop ammo over time, either automatically or when you attack it.

Eh, HL2 did that, with the gravity gun, except for the majority of the endgame + boss, but the 'boss' was boring as hell.
So it works, but it just doesn't seem at all interesting or fun in the end. It feels great to utilise your whole arsenal of weapons and abilities, for any genre...

Yeah, that's why I like my second idea better.

Fighting a single, really strong enemy in an FPS tends to be boring. IMHO, I'd rather slaughter hordes of enemies in an epic last stand. ФֻФ

I've always been a fan of multiple phases for story heavy games, because it shows that the villan will not give up his power or ambitions so easily, much like you most likely fought through near impossible odds to get this far.
A puzzle element is okay occasionally, like getting a boss to expose their weakness, which in this case, there should be an infinite use weapon that the boss is weak to when shot in the sweetspot. All other weapons can rush the weakness revelation, but the boss can reveal it for a super attack all on his own.
All this is my opinion rather than a fact, of course.

I like the Killzone 2 final boss. It was pretty hard and it wasn't just "shoot'em up". You actually had to use a strategy to defeat it.

The final boss in HL1 was done well and even though the last part of HL2:EP2 wasn't technically a final boss, it was still awesome.

The end of HL2:E2 was epic, as was the end of Timeplitters: Future Perfect. Neither boss moments were particulary easy the first time playing, but they're fun. HL2, you didn't really have to worry about ammo, since there were multiple stations that supplied restocking ammo and health, though they were destroyed if you weren't paying attention.

You realize shooting explosives into the portals destroys them, right?
