Why is it that I find 2-dimensional games much, much harder than 3-dimensional games? Something about them just makes them harder, and involve more thinking.
Is this true for anyone else?
A great example for me would be Zelda. The 2D games are a lot harder than the 3D ones (The Adventure of Link is a killer). Is there something about the third dimension that takes away difficulty? |

2D games have a stricter timing, I think. |

Well, back in the day, when games could only be 2-D, games were often shorter, and would go for longevity through difficulty. A lot of the newer ones are often trying to emulate those games, resulting in a similar difficulty.
That's my theory, anyway. |

The reason is because every obstacle you encountered in a 2D game, every monster and every hazard, you had to deal with.
In 3D games you can usually run around them or something. |

2-D was the best. Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario Bros. 3, all the good stuff. I still enjoy 3-D though. |

Not true, what with alternate paths and jumping. |

Not true, what with alternate paths and jumping. | But it's true, for the most part.

As you know, when 3-D games were born they started to make them more casual. 2-D games are old and are based to fit gamers. Just look at Nintendo's evolution and you'll see what I mean! |

Kirby's Dreamland 3 was one of the more difficult ones if you're a perfectionist. |

I'd also have to say Kirby Air Ride is difficult if you're a perfectionist.
Maaaaybe Kirby 64 for the same reason. |

2D games are harder. In some games you have to dodge things and there isn't much room to dodge on a 2D plane. |

I don't think it's a 2d/3d thing, but more so the state of modern games. Games in general are not as hard as they used to be now that publishers only care about teh casuals. Modern First-Person-Shooters can be very hard though, since that is a "hardcore" market.
New Super Mario Bros, for example, is much easier than Super Mario 64.
Many games (which are mostly in 3D) now-a-days have difficulty settings too, so you may be playing 3D games on "Normal", and not care enough to go back and try the "Uber-Hard" mode. |

I think that should only apply to Nintendo. 3D games for Sony/Microsoft are generally hard IMO. Nintendo went in the direction of casual gaming ever since the release of the Wii, no maybe even when the DS was first announced. This whole 2D/3D thing is really a Nintendo thing, kinda like the Wii vs. SNES. |
