You loose like 10.000 neurons a day. Just 'cos you got a couple billion means that you don't die.
But the brain will die. Organ failure and brain death are what makes people die - the control systems break down or the strain gets too great. Neurons don't regenerate, they're counted from birth. |
Fred Gage busted that myth in 2000 when he showed that even adults can grow new brain cells. There are specific regions of the brain that contain cells that re-enter the cell cycle and divide. The term for this 'neurogenesis'. In humans and other mammals one region known for its proliferative capacity is the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus.
I will find a way, oh that is to be certain. The brain is one organ that can live seemingly forever, granted that it has a source of energy. The only reason your other organs exist is to keep the brain alive. Everything you do is to keep it alive. Well, okay, 95% of everything you do is to keep it alive. Recreational stuff is just things your brain does because it releases endorphins, due to the fact that it enjoys those specific activity. However, even that has benefits to the brain.
The brain is the ultimate source of life. If you keep it alive, you can live on for eternity seemingly. Obviously no one has lived to a day where their brain goes kaput, so we wouldn't know for sure unless we actually find a way to sustain the brain. But that can't be certain till later. If all goes accordingly, one could gain the ability to never die from aging.
We'll just have to wait and see, hmm? |
