Just so you know, I'm dieing for an adventure game with the same concept of SSB ^^ I bet many people are too.
It would be simply awesome. And they could make some excuse for it not be canon, just so it can have a good story. For example, in SSB games(wich doesn't have a story anyway), it's a kid playing with toys, they aren't the real characters, in SMB2, Mario/all of them is/are dreaming. |

I just got some info from some sites I've been to and this is what I've found Nintendo originally titled Paper Mario as Super Mario RPG 2. However, because of Square's involvement in the original game, direct sequels were not legally possible without Square's permission and/or involvement, so Nintendo changed the title to Paper Mario, although the development of the game mechanic itself went for the most part unaltered.
Some of the original team members (including some from Square) that worked on the original worked on the Mario & Luigi series as well, including directors Yoshihiko Maekawa and Chihiro Fujioka and music composer Yoko Shimomura, albeit providing very different or similar styles and mechanics in those games from the original. Certain conventions established in the original have been carried over to the de facto sequels and expanded upon. For example, the use of "Flower Points" instead of magic points, timed action commands during battles, the platforming elements of the game, and the basing of the collecting of the seven stars in this game. These games also took the non-RPG concepts from the original and expanded upon it, allowing Mario to jump, hammer, ground pound, and use a variety of other techniques. Geno was featured in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, albeit in doll form. This is the only instance of an original character originating from the original in another game, crediting Square at the end for owning the rights to Geno. Nintendo also reused Star Hill from Super Mario RPG twice. The Mushroom Cabinet Minister in Super Mario RPG (Chancellor in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars) also makes a brief appearance in Paper Mario. |

The game wansn't 'paper' themed.

Mario was always able to jump and the hammer is older than SMRPG. I believe it was introduced in Wrecking Crew.

Speaking of cameos, did you know that several Nintendo characters, including Fox McCloud, Samus, 'Exite Biker', Link and Wario, were to make a cameo in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga? They'd appear when you buy stuff at Starbeans Cafe and give you items. Their items still exist in the game, but changed(the only unchanged is the one 'Exite Biker' would give you, but you get it by other means). The dialogue still exists in the game's coding.
Also, every real Mario fan knows those facts ^^ |
