I think it could have a bad effect, but not as strong as the Sun.
I agree that in some stories the reaction could be something mystical, but in some it might be just a reaction like an allergy.
Here's an idea for your story:
Vampire enters tanning booth and leaves with bad burns, smoking skin, blinded and groaning in pain. Then, if he survives a possible battle(I assume the responsible for his state would be near), he appears with a new look(burns on the face and arms and grayish burned eyes) and has better developed his ability to see things using his radar(like blind bats).

It would seem to me that the light in a tanning booth would be similar enough to the sun for it to induce negative effects.
