How about fake type items? They would basically seem exactly like a different item, but would have a slightly different effect, or a bonus effect. For those who remember the original Mario RPG, there were normal mushrooms that healed you, but there were also mushrooms that would shroomify you and looked exactly like the normal healing mushrooms.
