I have a theory about the mind and it's thought processes.

I believe that the mind is divided into three sections... the Conscious mind, the Subconscious mind, and the Sub-subconscious mind.

The Conscious mind is you... your personality, and your thoughts that are on your mind now.

The Subconscious mind is that that controls your memories, knowledge, and reactions. Although you may store knowledge and memory temporarily in the conscious mind, and may often control reactions as well, that is not the main function of the conscious mind, but rather the subconscious.

The Sub-subconscious mind is where you store dead or useless information and memories.

The Conscious has access to the Subconscious, the Subconscious has access the Conscious and the Sub-subconscious. The Sub-subconscious has access to both of the others.

Conscious = Subconscious < Sub-Subconscious > Conscious

= represents a two way link, </> represents a one way link.

Need examples to prove it?

When you see something, can you remember it by heart an hour later? Likely not. That is because your subconscious did not recognize it as important. Should you see it a few more times, or more often, however, the subconscious will see it as important and store it.

If you no longer need knowledge, it is "thrown away" into the sub-subconscious, and the sub-subconscious simply keeps it "safe" until you need it again.

Naturally, the conscious stores the least amount of memories and knowledge, the subconscious stores the second least.

So in reality, you are indeed smarter and wiser than you believe yourself to be... you simply do not have access to that part of your brain.

Questions? Arguments? Anyone feel the need to call me stupid?

Do you think that this entire thing applies to everybody?

I believe that everyone with a mind has the same three sections, yes.

Though I do not in any way believe they are all the same size, and function in the exact same way.

Feel free to attempt to sway my opinion if you feel it is wrong.

I would agree with this, but still, nobody knows how the human brain works...too advanced.

Stupid. XD

This is interesting, and I completely agree. A little something to add:

The Subconscious mind is triggered by many different senses, some more than others (like for me if I smell something it brings a huge flood of memories). The only way to get into the sub-subconscious mind is to trigger something in the subconscious mind that triggers something in the sub-subconscious mind. Make sense?

Isn't it true that we're only able to use like, 6% of our brains or something like that...?

That reminds me of the fact that humans only use 10% of our brains.

That's right. 10%. The other 90% does absolutely nothing. Imagine the possibilities if it did.

Actually, the other 90% does do stuff. Humans just haven't evolved to the stage that we can take advantage of it.

In other words, the people in Heroes are just the lucky people that can use more of their brains. Other than the obvious impossibilities, that is.

no, no, this is a foolish concept.

We only use 10% of our brains because we are only able to live for roughly 100 years... if our brains lived longer than that, we could compile large amounts of knowledge and use it thoroughly.

It has absolutely NOTHING to do with being able to use laser vision and fly around in tights.

I could see the ability to bend and control reality. Which, without proper physics, would tear the universe apart by the seams.

*laughs maniacally*

Sounds like fun. I should try it.

*Thinks hard and an icecream sundae appears out of thin are*

Cool!

*rift opens up in the sky and begins to suck everything in*

Crap!

*Universe falls apart*

=/

I'm talking about the basic premise. Their brains have evolved farther than the rest of everybody else's.

Also, I think it would be appropriate to assume that accessing one section of the brain activates all those behind it.
Example: If you see something you saw a long time ago, your sub-subconscious mind puts the thought in to both your subconscious mind and conscious mind. If I am following your theory, am I right?

mmm, in a way, yes. The subconscious is just your "ready at any time" place, for things that are important. Your sub-subconscious is your heavily guarded, 100 digit passworded vault.

When you "forget" something, it just slips farther away, to the back of your mind, where it is taken by the sub-subconscious and kept safe from being lost completely.

and about the evolution of the mind:
Telepathy seems possible, though not through thin air. If you had some sort of conductor you might be able to transfer brain waves, somehow, but that is a bit far in the future.

As far as picking things up with your mind... that's simply out of the question. We may not use 90% of our brains, but that doesn't mean that the 90 unused percent runs on fairy juice.

"Mind reading" could also be a possibility, because little brain waves are constantly being sent out through your head. If your brain became sensitive to these, you might be able to filter out a person's thoughts.

It's unlikely, though.

Air is a horrible conductor, you know.

Brain waves are mostly electrons, electricity, and if air doesn't conduct electricity, it can only be assumed that your thoughts are NOT going to decide to pop out of your head and stroll on over to somebody else's.
