Soen came into existance in this short. It was made a few months ago. Only took me 2½ hours to write.
Also, don't point out inaccuracies contradicticting what I've said about my characters.
Sol was a man that lived a thousand years ago. This man was no ordinary man… He led two lives. One as a reputable hero, saving lives where he traveled. The second was the very icon of fear and destruction, the one known as the Greater Destroyer. Where the Greater Destroyer went, death followed.
Sol lived a good life in a small village. He had lost his family as a child, and the person closest to him was his beloved, a woman named Mira. Mira was also no ordinary person- she was the daughter of a king. The two were engaged- the thing keeping them apart was Sol's occasional crusades. Nevertheless, Mira waited patiently for him to get back, no matter how long it would take. She had no idea that the "crusades" were not heroic deeds by a humanitarian, but raids and executions by the epitome of evil himself.
Unknown to him, Sol was not the only surviving member of his family. He had a younger brother, a boy named Soen. Nobody had seen Soen in the many years that had passed, so he was presumed dead. Sol even thought that his younger brother had been adopted by a god. Soen lived as an angel, fulfilling prayers that came up to the overworld. However, as he was not born a divine being, he had the traits of a human. Stubbornness, arrogance, ignorance… Because of this, Soen was not aware that his own brother was the one he despised.
All was well in the village, it was another normal day. The sun burning brightly, a light breeze passed through the air. Messengers passed in and out of the gates, as usual. However, today, one messenger in royal garbs approached and wished to talk to Mira. She welcomed him in, and sat down. "Knowing my father, he wouldn't send me a messenger unless it's urgent. What's going on?" she said. The messenger bowed his head. "He… didn't send me. I came on my own. You see… He's been killed." Mira looked up in shock. "W-what? Killed? But… why?" "It's… The Greater Destroyer. He cleared through the king's entire army alone. I'm the only survivor of the attack…"
Sol burst in through the door, also in shock. "No… How could one man do that? I… He must have gotten the wrong target! Nobody could possibly want to kill the king!" Both of them looked at Sol. "He's dead… I'm sorry, but it's true." The messenger picked up his things and started to leave. "The Greater Destroyer leaves no survivors. If he finds me, he'll have no reason to leave you alive, too. I need to get going, for your sake." As the door shut, Mira and Sol were left alone in the room.
"Dead… I can't believe it…" Mira still hung her head in grief. Sol tried to reassure her. "I'll do whatever I can… to stop this monster. He's taken enough lives already!" Hearing this, she stared at him. "He's killed over nine thousand trained soldiers, alone! You can't possibly stop him!" Sol looked down. "I've sworn to protect you… I'll do whatever it takes. If I die in trying to, so be it." He walked out of the room.
Hours later, and after a lot of hard thinking, Mira approached Sol. "I'll let you go… But under two conditions." Sol smiled, and asked "All right… what are the conditions?" "Avenge my father…" she paused. "And come back alive." With those words, he walked out of the house. "Heheheh… She definitely fell for that one." He thought to himself. He walked down the road, looked to the side and saw the messenger, crouching and trembling. "What are you doing?" Sol asked. The messenger looked up, petrified. "The Greater Destroyer… I've had a vision of him killing me." Sol kneeled. "Listen… I'm going to defeat this monster, no matter what the cost. Come on… I'll escort you. Here, there's even a shortcut here." Sol grabbed his hand; they went into the forest, and then silence. A second later, the stench of death filled the air. "Nobody survives…"
Mira sat at home, alone, worried for her beloved's survival. She left the house, went to a local dock, and made a request. "Where do you sail to?" The captain looked back and said "All the way across the ocean, to Katral and back." Mira smiled. "Perfect… I need you to bring their best assassin back here. Money is no object…" The captain looked over and prepared to sail. Katral was a city filled with mercenaries, and he just happened to know the best of them all. A person known only as the Shadowmaster.
A burning city was left in The Greater Destroyer's wake. The only things that remained were bodies everywhere, and a single man smiling. In the twisted mind of Sol, killing was the only thing that provided decent fun. "Took that messenger long enough to get to the village. I made that raid… what, five or six months ago?" He said to himself. His little plan was playing out perfectly. Keep up his reputation as a hero, while slowly dismantling the world, piece by piece. Soon enough, there wouldn't be enough people left in the world to hold a stable government. At that time, he could take control…
A throwing knife went flying past Sol's head. Looking back in surprise, he saw a person wearing dark, foreign clothes. "So… Shadowmaster… You finally come to me?" Shadowmaster kept his cold stare fixed on the Greater Destroyer. "Hah… We may be rivals, but I'm not here for fun. This time, I have a contract to fulfill… And I have to take out you." Sol laughed. "Hah… So now these people are sending petty assassins to try and kill me? Tell me, who hired you? I'll get them after I'm done with you…" Shadowmaster smiled behind his mask. "Oh, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want to kill my client." Sol jumped up to Shadowmaster with blinding speed, and held his neck against a wall. "Tell me… Or I'll make your death painful." "And if I tell you, you'll kill them right away?" "Of course! TELL ME!"
More laughter followed. "My my… I wouldn't know for myself, but I don't think loyal fiancés plan on killing their girlfriends that hastily." Sol froze, and the vision of him with a sword though his beloved appeared in his mind. Shadowmaster recognized the state of shock, and swung his foot up, making quick contact with Sol's chin. He went flying back, in even more disbelief, "How… could you have done that? I'm invincible…" Sol grunted as he wiped the blood from his lips. Shadowmaster stared onwards. "You want to know why I'm the only person that has been able to stand up to you? Have you even wondered why you're so strong in the first place?' Enraged, Sol jumped up and swung a fist at his rival. After a flash of light, he was lying on the ground once more.
"You're the son of a god. That's what gives you power." Shadowmaster looked down, kicking Sol in the gut. "You were born with potential, but abused your power. You're unworthy." Sol looked up. "How… do you know this? How… can you possibly defeat me?" Shadowmaster pulled out Sol's sword, lying on the ground. "Your brother, Soen. He knows of you. He has blessed me, because I'm the only one that had enough potential to stop your reign of terror." Sol's eyes turned red. "No… You're lying! My brother's dead!" One final yell of pain was let out as The Greater Destroyer was defeated by the weapon that had harvested so many souls.
"I'm sorry… I tried to assist him to the best of my ability, but he was still lost…" Shadowmaster looked down as he dropped the diamond that Sol carried around. "I… I understand. Thank you… You don't know how much you've done for the world." Mira said with a heavy heart. She picked the diamond off the table and held it close to her. "He… Was such a good person…" Shadowmaster looked up. "Actually… There's something I have to tell you. Sol defeated The Greater Destroyer and lived. However… Somebody else hired another assassin to do the same deed. Naturally, Sol was mistaken for the target, and was killed without knowing what was going on…" Mira looked up in disbelief. "He… was strong enough to do it and live?" Shadowmaster looked puzzled. "Yes… I guess so. Although, that's not the way I was expecting you to take the news." Mira started to cry. "I don't know… Whether I'm happy or sad about it… I mean…" She wiped away some tears and continued. "He fulfilled one of his promises… and almost fulfilled the other. But… I can't sleep knowing his killer is still out there."
As Shadowmaster was on the voyage home, he looked over to his sister. "Hey, Tess… You think I should have told her the truth?" She thought for a second, and replied "I spent a while with her while you were gone. I've been getting to know her… She's the type that wouldn't believe the truth." Shadowmaster nodded. "I guess. It would be hard to believe that the nicest person you could know is actually the one responsible for all this chaos in the world." Tess shrugged. "She'd probably have you killed if she knew the truth." He looked up into the night sky. "Yeah… probably. I guess some things are best kept a secret…"
Back at the village, Mira lied in bed, thinking about how she missed Sol. It would be a long night without any peace of mind, so she got out, held the diamond close to her heart and kneeled down. "I'm not a believer in gods… But if there is any divine being watching, I beg of you. Please… Do not let my beloved's life… His work, his efforts, his soul… Do not let these die away. Do anything you can… Please, I beg of you. Avenge his soul. Punish the one that did this…"
Mira looked out into the window. A shooting star flew by. Knowing she had done all she could, she climbed back into bed and went to sleep with a peaceful mind. With all the things running through her head, she didn't even notice the diamond she was holding was gone.
Soen, watching the earth as night passed, noticed one thing. A diamond, no larger than the size of a marble, was flying up towards him. Only one thing could make this happen, he thought, as he grabbed it. As the angel held it, the prayer of Mira went into his mind. He had not been watching the events as they occurred, and made a decision. This was evidentially no ordinary person that had been killed. The least he could do is to ease the mind of the poor soul left without a companion. Soen began his descent to earth.
"Katral." This was the place that the killer resided. Soen had been asleep since he granted Shadowmaster power, and was not aware that the story Mira believed was untrue. This place feels strangely familiar, he thought, as he opened the door into a building. A dojo, it made sense that a skilled assassin would live here. Soen walked into the middle of the room and detected a powerful force. "Show yourself!" he yelled, as Shadowmaster jumped by. "Soen… It's me… Shadowmaster…" a voice said as Soen stood in the middle of the room. "No… I gave you power to defeat the Greater Destroyer… And you used it to kill my brother?"
"You don't understand!" Shadowmaster yelled as he dodged a blast of light. It wouldn't be easy surviving against an unusually stubborn demigod. "I understand fully. You turned on me… You turned on Mira… You turned on the very person you swore to protect! You crushed the hopes of an innocent woman!" Shadowmaster blocked another blast. "No… Stop this for one second and listen!" His mind clouded, Soen drew his own sword. The one that had been forged by the gods. "I'll listen to you once you're rotting in the underworld!" He swung his blade, and after a flash, the only thing standing in front of him was black smoke.
Behind him, however, was a different matter. Shadowmaster struck Soen in the neck, causing him to collapse. "Soen… I told Mira a false story! Your brother WAS the Greater Destroyer!" Soen got up, sweeping Shadowmaster's legs in the process. "I should have known not to give so much power to a murderer like you…" "Listen…"
Shadowmaster appeared on the other side of the room. "Do what you like. Give me power, take it away. Beat me, send me to hell. But whatever you do… Do not compare me to those pleasure killers." His eyes went black, and a sword materialized in his hand. It was practically a mirror image of Soen's holy blade, save the face that it was completely dark. Soen began to panic. Had he given Shadowmaster so much power, he created a darker version of himself? Enraged, Shadowmaster ran at Soen and swung his blade. It made contact with its light counterpart, and a massive blast followed.
Soen woke up in a bed. "Well, finally awake. It's been a week since we found you in the rubble of that building." He looked up to see the local innkeeper standing over him with a bucket of water. "Ugh… what happened?" Soen managed to say, holding his head in pain. The innkeeper looked over. "Nobody really knows. Some time, in the middle of the night, a building exploded. We found you and another young guy in the debris." Soen looked up in surprise. "Exactly where am I?" The innkeeper said "You're in the local inn, silly. Where else?" Soen shook his head. "…Who am I?"
Shadowmaster patrolled the underworld. It had been two years since he arrived, after the explosion. Obviously, this was something fairly new to him. He had become conscious only a few days earlier. As he looked around, he saw one familiar face.
The Greater Destroyer.
"You… I know you from somewhere. You're the one that sent me to this place!" He yelled. Shadowmaster recoiled in shock. Not because of the fact that he had found this demon in the infinite reaches of the underworld, but because of something else. This entity had no trace of any good he had done while alive. If The Greater Destroyer was really the person standing in front of him, he should have at least some memory of the lives he actually saved. Knowing what this meant, Shadowmaster returned to the surface. Even though it was his duty to watch the underworld, his new position as an angel would just have to wait.
Mira sat by herself, sipping tea. It just isn't the same without him, she thought. Somebody knocked on the door. She got up and opened it, not expecting what she saw. The person standing there was Sol. The Greater Destroyer was gone now, and his mind was finally under a single person's control. The world was finally at peace again.
Screw it, I'm saving a few hours and handing this in as an English assignment. It's 5 pages long. >:D |
