For quite a while, my opinion on the "greatest game ever made" couldn't find a definite spot. It flew back and forth between a few Zelda and Final Fantasy games; I really couldn't decide. Well, my opinion just changed again. And this time, I'm more sure about it than I have ever been before.
GAMEPLAY: Super Mario Bros. was revolutionary. It invented an entire genre, and had a huge impact on the gaming industry; one that is felt even to this day. Super Mario 64 took it a step further, bringing Mario into the 3D world. And now we have Super Mario Galaxy. Although not as revolutionary as the previously mentioned games, the gameplay is still excellent, and enjoyable every step of the way.
The gameplay, being similiar to Mario 64, has an old-yet-new feel. You still jump from platform to platform, squash enemies, and search for stars. However, the fun factor is definitely heightened with the new powerups, gravity-ignoring worlds, and enemies ranging from easy to challenging.
The controls work wonderfully. Of course, it would probably take some getting-used-to, but only for newcomers to the Wii, but it won't take long until the controls feel natural. With remote in one hand for aiming, and nunchuck in the other for movement, the game will never feel weird after the first ten minutes.
From brilliant level designs to the feeling of wonder as you travel from planet to planet, just waiting to see what happens next, it is a joy to play throughout the entire experience.
10/10
ART/GRAPHICS: The environments are wonderful to look at. Beautifully detailed, and rich in variety, you never get a dull feeling from enjoying your surroundings. The graphics are wonderful for a Wii game, proving that the Wii can create nice-looking games.
10/10
SOUND: I was so delighted to learn that Nintendo bothered to include orchestrated music in this installment. Even the non-orchestrated music has that delightful Mario feel. Beautiful music is in the background of the game every step of the way, and I can't think of any bad examples off the top of my head.
Now, there are a few annoying sound effects here and there. The squeaks of the stars, for instance. But the good more than makes up for the bad.
9.8/10
PLOT: The plot is simple, as with all Mario games. Mario's old, grouchy villain, Bowser, decides to make off with the princess. However, with a Mario game, what more is needed? This classic scenario is perfect for the Mario series, and it doesn't get old. That isn't to say that more would hurt the game, oh no. Galaxy does embellish it, with some aspects.
10/10
SUMMARY: If you have a Wii, but not interested in Galaxy, you're an idiot. It is by far the best game for the Wii; it is more deserving of praise than both Twilight Princess and Corruption combined (Both excellent games, at that.) Change your mind, and don't miss out on a great game.
If you don't have a Wii, or don't want one, reconsider getting one. Galaxy alone is enough to justify purchasing the system. If you think that Mario is "kiddy" or not "cool", then you aren't a gamer. You should be ashamed to even call yourself one, when these so-called "kiddy" games happen to be some of the best games out there.
Mario Galaxy is the best game for the Wii so far. It is also the best platforming game so far. It is the best Mario game so far, as well. And, it may very well be the greatest game ever made so far.
Never have I played a game where every second of the experience was pure joy. Never have I played a game that has immersed me in a world full of such fantasy and wonder as Galaxy has. Mario Galaxy is a must-have, and it will be remembered for ages to come, just as Mario 64 and Super Mario Bros. have.
Final Score (I don't use averages.): 10/10 |
