Everyone cool is doing reviews, so I may as well contribute. So yeah, today I'll be reviewing La-Mulana, the game that made us all die at the hands of DeceasedCrab's screams.
Story - 7/10
The story is that you are Lemeza Kosugi, an archaeologist teaching at a college, when you get a letter from your father (This is taken from the manual), with a coin in it, and the letter says "I finally found it. I win!". Lemeza then goes to the ruins of La-Mulana, where the coin came from, and tries to find the ancient treasure of La-Mulana. At first, you have no idea what the feck is going on, but as the game goes on you see the plot, which is basically the being that created the world, Mother, wants to go back to the sky because the came down, but she can't, so ya gotta kill her. I don't reallly get it, but whatever :/
Gameplay and Challenge - 9/10
It was hard NOT to give this a perfect 10/10, but Hell Temple pissed me off so I knocked off a point. The gameplay is similar to Castlevania and the other games of old, you run, jump, and hit. There are several weapons, like the Whip, Axe, Shurikens, Keyblade (Not KH, mind you), and the Flare Gun. There are several areas to go to, and as some are very easy, others are very hard and unforgiving. One of the bad points of the game is that before you get a certain item, water hurts you just by contact. How the hell does that work? The game is also very long; enough to keep you entertained for weeks to come. Some of the bosses are also extremely difficult, especially the last ones.
Graphics - 6/10
The graphics aren't the best in the world, which are actually 8-bit graphics. Fun fact: The creators of the game were disappointed with the difficulty of present-day games, so they made this as a throwback to the old games. What would be more appropriate than 8-bit graphics? Even with the graphics, the environments, backgrounds, and bosses look amazing.
Music - 7/10
The music has two versions; a crappy Midi version, and a kickass Midi version. The crappy version, I believe SSCC, uses generic Midi sounds, while the other, SC88, uses not so common Midi sounds, and is generally better. The sound effects are also simple; there's a little crack when the whip is used, and the like thrown around.
Overall - 9/10
Despite having some flaws, La-Mulana is truly an amazing homebrew game. If you prefer the old games of yore to the newer next-gen games, definitely give La-Mulana a try. Did I mention how easy it is to edit the files of the game? :3
You can pick up the game here (as well as the English patch): http://agtp.romhack.net/project.php?id=lamulana
Well, there's my first review. Whacha think?

Here's an example of how easy it is to edit the game's files. (NOT FINISHED)
I simply took sprites I already made and edited the palette they used so it wouldn't screw everything else's palette. Then I just placed them accordingly, and it was done in no time. |
