Forgive me if this was already said, but I'm too lazy to look back. Some Goombas have very rounded heads, and always give you a coin, whether you spin or jump on them, and then some have pointed heads, and give star bits when spun into and coins when jumped on. WHY!!! |

The rounded heads are supposed to be some sort of Mini-goomba, I believe.
Therefore, they are weaker, which apparently makes it easier to get a coin out of them. |

Normal Goombas are more brown and have pointier heads, and spinning into them makes them flip onto their backs. The slightly greener Goombas walk slower and give a coin no matter how you defeat it. |

There are actually THREE types of Goombas.
Brown Goombas: Normal.
Greenish Goombas ("Gloombas", perhaps?): Coin, no matter what.
Metal-headed Goombas (Robo-Goombas): Spin, then jump on top. Always a coin. |

*facepalm* I mean basic Goombas. Because there are also pumkin headed ones. I'm just talking about the all brown, no costume ones. |

Perhaps the greenish ones are darker and more shaped weirdly because they used to have the helmets some of the other Goombas have?
Also for difference...
-Normal Goombas lean forward and look angry when they see you and start charging at you.
-The greenish ones lean backward and don't change their facial expression. |
