Yeah, the running while he's throwing the rocks at you always works well. I didn't think to attack while his hands were raised, though. I always destroyed one of his hands before attacking him.
You can shoot the black rocks with star bits to break them open, and the boo bomb will be right next to him. Once you do that, just spin near him and the bomb boos will hit him.

I've beaten him many many times. it took me 8 tries the first time, then I just needed one or two. I still screw up every so often, but he's pretty predictable after you've fought him enough.

yea. He was the hardest boss (or level) in the game, but he is the one I had most fun with. (it was the only time I got my brother to play the game. He saw that I couldn't beat him, and wanted to try himself.)
