It would also help create places that people just want to hang out at and talk to certain people and exclude themselves from flames.

I mean, its the important threads there that people pay attention to (the ones that might require a password)

but this would be a problem only if people used the feature very frequently, which I don't think will happen

Agreed. But make it an item or limit how much you can do it so it doesn't get abused.

Agreed. I was actually thinking of suggesting this myself, but I decided against it. Now it's a good idea again.
