I think that the game has a lot of hints as to what the last boss will be like. On that first Grand Star, that machine was making some big ball thing, and it looked a bit like a fiery ball. And on the first Bowser battle, there were little balls of fire surrounding where Bowser was standing, and it looked like little stars(not the ones you see in the sky at night). And in the Flaming Dino Piranha fight, it was set in a similar setting, near a giant star, and the boss battle was similar to the final Bowser battle.

Um, this was just kind of a random thought really.....but, do you think that they did that on purpose to kind of foreshadow what the ending was going to be like, or was it just designed like that?

Maybe, but in all due honesty, its' not that clever, really. Making the final boss stage on a star really was kind of expected. ._.

64: He ground pounds the area into a star, so yup.

Sunshine: The hot tub has five things YOU have to ground pound. (How backwards....)

Galaxy: The star is sick of getting pounded, so you're inside of it this time, and bowser nails into it, so it gets pissed and will be the main enemy in super mario moonlight.
