Well, I've never had depression, but I can give some advice.

Try a hobby, spend your time doing something. Participate in Drama club, golf, play a sport! Something you can burn a lot of energy, time, and anger in.

From when I was 9-12, I was depressed. I had medication. It made things worse. I realized I screwed up by placing my happiness and well-being of some medicine that only made me feel suicidal and dependent. Hating myself for even getting medicine in the first place, I stopped taking it. My optimism improved little by little, and I guess when I found Digibutter, I realized that people have worse lives than I do.

So I stayed happy.

Now I feel sad again. But I'll deal with depression on my own now, because I feel like I managed to make something of myself, because now I don't feel so self-centered and weak.

Well, my parents don't know what a teenager does in this day and age, so they think I'm addicted to and obsessing over my computer. I'll admit I'm on a lot, but that doesn't mean I'm addicted to it. What else am I supposed to do when I'm bored and don't feel like playing my Wii or DS?

Well, anyway, turns out my doctor gives me an antidepressant to fix this "problem" that really isn't. The pills are actually MAKING me depressed. I was never depressed to begin with! And now I feel like crap every time I take one, and I'm forced to.

This sucks.

There are different strengths of depression. If you had depression for a year and got over it, you're one of the lucky ones.

I have had it for... well, my whole life. I'm on three different kinds of medication, 350 mg a day total, and I'll have to take them for the rest of my life. Even the pills don't do enough and I have to go to weekly therapy as well. Even if everything in my life is going perfectly well, and I miss one pill, one day, I have a complete total breakdown and they need to take me to a hospital. I have tried to kill myself at least 3 times, by swallowing whole bottles of pills, and one time I was very, very close to succeeding. I spent Christmas break in a mental hospital once.
99% of the time I deal with it well, but then there's the fact that because of my depression, I have no future. If you're as ill as I am, you won't be able to get a job, because they're afraid you'll snap on the job or something, even if you CAN manage yourself well. Somehow I manage to keep living, despite the fact that I'm *crag* for eternity.

Get a psychiatric evaluation and see if you need medication. Find a good therapist; if your therapist tells you you're imagining your problem, they're not good. If the therapy building has a religious affiliation, they're not good. If they just sit there and listen to you talk, without any feedback, they're not good. A very good therapist should actually give you handouts, journals, and assignments in order to track your mood and teach you coping skills. It should actually feel like a class, oddly enough; a class where they're teaching you to be able to deal with your basic emotions like people who don't have depression can.

And don't let ANYONE tell you you're making up your illness. Don't let ANYONE call you emo. Don't let ANYONE say "you'll get over it," or "you don't have the right to be miserable." If anyone says one of those things to you, even someone you considered a friend, disown them. They'll just bring you further and further down, and are pretty much just not worth your time.

Your depression might turn out to go away fast. It might turn out to *crag* up your entire life. The only way to find out is to get a psychiatric evaluation. Any time you feel like you want to kill yourself, call your therapist, once you get one. If you don't have one, look up your local suicide hotline number, or your local hospital, and call them. Call 911 if you have to. Just DON'T IGNORE IT.

Thanks for the advice...

I do not want to start taking any kind of medication, though. I want to pull out of it myself... I feel like I should have the capacity to...

I might be better, as my thoughts haven't strayed to those things since that one night, and the days before.

I have big depression issues. When I'm with my friends is really the only time it doesn't show, so most people don't believe me when I say I do. i just try to hang out with the people that cheer me up.

DON'T DO THAT. That is complete and utter bullshit. *crag* anyone who says you can snap out of it, because you can't.

It's an illness caused by body chemicals. If you had diabetes, would you refuse to take insulin, allowing the illness to take its toll on you, while you sat there and said "I should be able to pull myself out of this"?

I'm relatively lucky, since I have never experienced any negative impulses towards myself...or even been in any form of depression. At most, I have been upset for about an hour or so, when I was a lot younger. However, I can offer some general advice. Do not be tempted in which to use anti-depressants. They don't work at all, and in certain cases, prolong your negativity. Try to focus on happy memories, or nostalgic objects, since they are bound to overwhelm you with pleasure from a time prior to your depression. Don't harm yourself, it can cause irreparable damage, and is a barbaric way to release pressure. Try not to think about saddening things, and focus primarily on the good, and always remember that every cloud has a silver lining.

I'm going to have to disagree with you there, Jolene. Medication is not for everyone. It works for some people, yes, but for others, the effects can be disastrous. Anti-depressants have been known to cause depression to increase, or, in some cases, to cause suicide.

Also, depression is not necessarily caused BY the body's chemicals. In some cases, yes, you are totally right. In other cases, depression can be brought on by stress, traumatic events, or anything of the like. When caused by stress and traumatic events, there is a change in brain proteins, however this change is not permanent. In those cases, medication is a bad idea. A very bad idea.
