Lesson Plan - A Room Full of Penguins - Let's Take a Trip to the Arctic

Themes - penguins, what they do, and the letter P

Initiation - "What kind of bird is black and white and waddles around?" A PENGUIN!
Today we are going to read a story about a penguin, do a penguin song and game, and learn about what penguins do.

Objective:
1) Students will be able to listen to the story Tacky the Penguin, recall one thing the penguins in the story did and how Tacky did it differently, and recall how Tacky saved the day.
2) Students will be able to complete the learning center tasks with teacher assistance.
3) Students will be able to make a construction paper penguin and dress him in a tissue-paper Hawaiian shirt.
4) Students will be able to do a song and dance about penguins that they will be taught in the gym.
5) Students will be able to identify items beginning with the letter P.

Input:
1) The teacher will read the story Tacky the Penguin.
2) The teacher will discuss the story with students.
3) The teacher will show students things beginning with the letter P, and students will practice identifying the object.
4) The teacher will help students make a construction paper penguin with a tissue-paper Hawaiian shirt like Tacky's.
5) The teacher will assist students in different penguin-related learning centers, such as a penguin-themed simple board game, a worksheet about penguins, and a science activity where students can use paper bags and ice to see how penguins stay warm in cold water.
6) Modeling - the teacher will show students a completed tacky penguin project.
7) Modeling - during dance room times, the teacher will teach students a song about penguins with accompanying dance movements.
8) Students will create their own Hawaiian shirt penguin.
9) Students will perform the penguin song with the teacher.

Check for Understanding:
1) Name one of the things that the penguins in the story did. How did Tacky do it differently from the other penguins?
2) What did Tacky do that saved all the other penguins from being caught by the hunter?
3) Where do penguins live? Do they live in a cold place, a hot place, or both?
4) How do penguins keep their eggs warm until they hatch?
5) How do penguins stay warm in cold water? What could you do to stay warm in cold water?

Closure - Today we learned about things penguins do, like what they eat and how they stay warm. You were able to do a song and dance about penguins, and you did a great job of making your own penguin pictures.
What would you have eaten for lunch today if you were sharing your food with a penguin? You wouldn't want to eat a raw fish… he wouldn't want to eat peanut butter and jelly… maybe you could share a tuna fish sandwich!

Wasn't the trip to the arctic to play with penguins fun? Tomorrow we're going to take a trip to (introduce the next day.)
