Back when the first Digimon toy was first made (before the anime was ever made... or maybe just before it reached America), there was a little electronic pet toy that was supposed to look like a cage with the bars busted. That electronic pet toy functioned exactly like a tamagotchi, except that the virtual pet inside of it could battle other virtual pets. I used to have one of those toys. |
Ahh, That's exactly what I remembered it as.
If Popple is correct, then that means that the toy was a rip off of Digimon AND Tamagotchi. |

It's possible that that toy could have just been based off whatever started Digimon. |

The toy was released on June 26, 1997 by Bandai. The anime first aired on March 6, 1999. I got these facts from Wikipedia. Bandai had made the Tamagotchi first though, and had pretty much meant the original Digimon to be a Tamagotchi for boys.
In other words, the toy which was a Tamagotchi ripoff is what started Digimon. |

Wrong. Digimon originated as a Tamagotchi for boys which could be considered a game, followed by an Anime. |
